Will Eisner - The Spirit's Casebook Of True Haunted Houses And Ghosts (Tempo, 1976) Good Ghost of Llanwellyn Visitor at Lawford's Gate The Ghost of Inmate 23 Admiral Tryon's Ghost The Barbados Ghost Ghost Cavalry of La Bassee Fair Ghost on the HMS ASP rhe Ghost of Johnny Daniel The Will of Chaffin's Ghost The Swimming Ghosts The Messenger Ghost The House Ghost Ghostly Justice The Trapped Ghost The Curse of Cornstalk The Ghost at 226 5th Ave Mrs. Webb's Ghost Ghost of Midnight Watch The Handless Ghost The Silver Ghost The Trip of Mrs. Wilmot The Impatient GhostThis is lovely, pitched somewhere between Lee Coye's Weirdisms and Tales From The Crypt minus the gloating commentary. The Spirit (thanks, Stavner )- you suspect he's not a man given much to smiling - relates a series of these 'true' ghost stories, the best of which are delightfully horrible. To give those who may not have seen a copy some idea. Good Ghost of Llanwellyn: Off to a false start with this Welsh legend of a spectral do-gooder who rides to the rescue of Rev. Jones when he's set upon by a scythe-wielding bandit. Visitor at Lawford's Gate: This is more like it! Poltergeist jiggery-pokery in the Giles household over the winter of 1761. A maid is felled by a flying wineglass, but she gets off lightly in comparison with little Molly Giles who is half-throttled, bitten and misused as a human pin-cushion by the vindictive visitor. The hand! The terrible disembodied hand! The Ghost of Inmate 23: 'Crazy Mary' Murphy, vagrant, hangs herself in New Orleans' Fourth Precinct Police Station, the first of a succession of prisoners to either kill themselves, die mysteriously or go hopelessly insane after spending a night in that particular cell. A prostitute, cut down in the nick of time, swears she was approached by a spectral hag who goaded her into ending it all. Crazy Mary likes company. Ghostly Justice: Blackburn, Lancashire, 1636. When he learns that his comely housekeeper, Anne Walker, is pregnant by another man, collier Mark Sharp brutally kicks and pick-axes her to death then dumps her body in a coal pit. Anne doesn't take it lying down.

Shouldn't the Shadow be the Spirit?

While the Spirit often fought real ghosts, zombies and aliens etc, his strip was at its best in its post-World War II film-noir mode (even in colour). Someone once sent me a postcard with this splash page. If today was the first time that I saw it, I would want to read the story. It is called "Death of Autumn Mews".

Great book! And hard to find. First discovered it in the school library, in 1985.
Quite eerie, and a good read. Having forgotten about the gruesome little paperback, until recently. I tried searching for it, but couldn't remember the book's title or author - but I did remember the vivid cover art (screaming girl) - and did a quick google search for books on ghosts. I'd got a hit, and on seeing the cover again, decades later, the memories came flooding back.
I was lucky enough to find a battered copy (with original cover art) on eBay. Read it twice in one day. Would love to see it get republished.

Sorry! Did you get the next cheapest copy? The next cheapest copy wasn't in very good condition, and the next cheapest after that didn't feature the original cover, so I'm going to bide my time. I'll be curious to hear what you think of the book!

I'm going to bide my time. Meanwhile, prices are skyrocketing on this item. It is the "Vault Effect."

The original artwork is superior - and more suited to the ghoulish subject matter: Alternate, less offensive cover: I may get another copy for the alternate cover art.
