A short story from the 1980 anthology 'New Tales From The Cthulthu Mythos', edited by Ramsey Campbell. It has all the creeping dread that one associates with HP Lovecraft. It is similar in tone to his tale 'The Festival'. Unusually, it is set in England, Crouch End in North London. I'm always a sucker for time/dimension slip stories, and this is a corker. I had got a bit bored with King's tales, but this is a tale, that if you were not told that it was written by him, you would never guess. Whenever i read it, I'm left with an uncomfortable feeling. That, surely, is the idea of this sort of tale.

I read this when it came out, and for some reason I had John Carpenter's soundtrack for Prince of Darkness playing while I read - I can highly recommend the experience!

I'm very fond of it too. "1408" and "N" also both make me as uneasy as it does - hurrah!
