For a while now, I've been playing around with a self-imposed challenge inspired by reading too many anthology introductions: namely, coming up with the contents for a hypothetical horror anthology using only stories that have never appeared in a previous anthology. Here's one take:
William Hope Hodgson – The Call in the Dawn (1920) A ship investigates a mysterious voice emanating from the Sargasso Sea.
Greye La Spina – The Devil’s Pool (1932) “A thrilling novel of an evil pool in an abandoned quarry—an eery werewolf story.”
Henry Kuttner – The Frog (1939) “Thus horror came to Monk’s Hollow.”
Robert Bloch – A Sorcerer Runs for Sheriff (1941) Witchcraft and politics make for a bad mix.
Fritz Leiber – Diary in the Snow (1947) Cosmic terror comes wrapped in a blizzard.
Theodore Sturgeon – Die, Maestro, Die! (1949) Fluke tries and tries to kill the music, but it can’t be done.
Manly Wade Wellman – The Pineys (1950) Who is the King of the Pineys, the hidden race of the Appalachians?
Shirley Jackson- The Missing Girl (1957) A girl scout vanishes more comprehensively than one would have thought possible.
Cornell Woolrich – My Lips Destroy (1959) Its other title is more literal, if less evocative: “Vampire’s Honeymoon.”
David Grubb – Busby’s Rat (1964) Busby is a bitter old river worker; don’t cross him, or his rodents will pay a visit.
Basil Copper – The Great Vore (1967) The ritual has begun . . . sacrifice is going on tonight.
Sterling Lanier- His Only Safari (1970) The most dangerous game is not man, after all.
If any of these stories has, in fact, appeared in an anthology, please let me know!

It looks like an intriguing selection. Maybe you could interest a publisher...

good selection - be a pricey one to get rights though?

seriously, that selection is worthy of the mighty Weinberg/ Dziemainowicz/ Greenberg triumvirate - and, sadly, they've a vacancy to fill. Just saying ....

Thanks, all!
Since you mentioned the late, great Martin H. Greenberg: I used to teach in the same university system where he had his day job (the University of Wisconsin system--he taught at the Green Bay campus, while I was at the Milwaukee campus). He'd retired before I got there, however, and I never had the chance to meet him.
Unlike Greenberg, I have zero knowledge of the (non-academic) publishing world, so my anthology ideas are strictly for fun. I suspect that Johnny is right about the rights (especially the Jackson story?), so maybe next time around I'll try Never Anthologized II: Out of Copyright. That would be a challenge . . .

well Cauldron - if anyone could do it, I'm sure it's you! I'm still working on an anthology called ANON HORROR - where every horror story is written by...well, you guessed it, Mr or Mrs Anon...
