on the contrary, i reckon they'll be compulsory. i've never understood the appeal, myself: who in the right mind wants to be available to wankers they can't stand 24 hours a day? way things are going, it can't be long until it's made a capital offence not to carry a fully topped up mobile on your person at all times. So far this year, i've had dealings with the local housing association, builders, and hospital staff and in each case they want my mobile number. when i answer, honestly, that i ain't got one, they look at me like i'm either certifiably insane or LYING.

I just keep mines turned off all the time now. Use it for the interweb - and can surf THE VAULT without the app... But yeah, any new job I get, they ask for the mobile number, I tell them I don't have one. They got, but how are we supposed to get in touch with you if we need you in for a shift if someone doesn't come in? I say - you won't, I'll be on a day off and I have caller ID on the landline....

I hate the things - the only time I've found them useful is when stuck on a German autobahn with a sadly disabled car. My favourite is watching people on a train approach a station. They pick up the mobile and say 'yes I can see you on the platform' the concepts hello and waving being generally forgotten

Hm, this reminds me of the first Cybermen episode on the new Dr.Who where all those bluetooth addicts were turned into Cybermen Like "it´s ten o´clock - and your government knows where you are!"
