I've recently been buying copies of the old books on horror films I used to own when I was a lad (they either fell to bits or went astray years ago)
There is one book whose title I can't remember but I seem to recollect that the endpapers were illustrated with a colour still from "Madhouse" with Vincent Price. I could be wrong about this - maybe the still was in the main body of the book - but I do remember it depicted a cloaked figure approaching a river on which was floating a small boat containing a dead body (Linda Hayden's, if I'm not mistaken)
I know this is pretty vague, but I can't recall much else re. this particular book.
The other books I've re-acquired by Alan Frank (Horror Movies) and Denis Gifford (Pictorial History of Horror Movies) don't contain this image but I'm certain it was in one of the similar books I used to pore over.
Does all this ring any bells? I can say for certain the title in question was published in the '70s and was a large format hardback, not much else.
I'd be very grateful for any tips, or a positive ID. Thanks.

hi Stephen; not sure, but i think you might be after the Sphere 1970 edition of Angus Hall's Devil Day (Sphere, 1970). does this cover ring any bells?

Thanks for the suggestion, Demonik. The book I'm after was definitely about horror films, one of those profusely illustrated surveys of the genre. By a strange coincidence I do like Angus Hall. I read his adaptation of Scars of Dracula years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't know he had a hand in Madhouse, though. Cheers.

Yep it is an Alan Frank book called HORROR FILMS. Large format hardback with the endpapers you described. Pulished by Hamlyn in '77. Front cover is from a hammer Frankenstein film with a guy having the top of his head removed. Endpapers are indeed scenes from Madhouse.

This pic is not quite the same edition I have (different fonts etc) but this is the book you're after. Attachments:

That is indeed the book - mine had a slightly different cover too, and the front endpapers were from Madhouse and the rear endpapers had Luan Peters tied to a slab from The Devil's Men / Land of the Minotaur. It covered horror movies up to the then-current time of 1976!

Many thanks to you both, DSG and JLP!
I'm amazed that I'd forgotten about that cover photo!
I've just ordered a very reasonably priced copy from Abebooks which is described as being in near fine condition but lacks the dw. I've bought from the dealer before so I'm confident I won't be disappointed.
I've got a feeling I'm in for a bit of a nostalgia trip when I open the parcel. Haven't laid eyes on this one since c. 1983.
Thanks again for the help, guys. Very much appreciated.

That was the first book I ever owned about horror films. Now I need to own it again.

i love this book. i must have first come across it when i was about 8 and it helped to feed my love for the horror movie genre.
the edition i have is the 1983 edition. on the front it has stills from the frozen dead, Frankenstein and the monster from hell and the scars of Dracula. on the back it has Lon Chaney in the original phantom of the opera
