Before opening a new thread elsewhere about Fritz Leiber (I know there is one open but it's more of a query than a review/bibliography one, and I can't find another), I'm going to harass demonik again, little as our very hard-working friend deserves it, and ask for a section with an A - Z listing of authors and/or editors already featured around the Vault. It would help prevent the explosion of threads we're getting and stop people duplicating what's already up, and make it easier to find helpful stuff about authors and anthologies. I'd gladly volunteer to trawl sections, taking names and listing related threads, and I'm sure everyone else would too. We could all help to keep it updated by adding any new links we start to the lists, so once it was set up it shouldn't need an overhaul too often. How about it, dem?

i'll certainly have a go when i've a few hours to spare lemmy, as god knows, it would be a help - we ain't exactly the most user-friendly board. bit of luck and i'll get stuck in later in week. to be honest, it looks like an absolute bastard of a task but good training for me as a year on i'm still trying to muster sufficient courage to tackle an index to the bibliophiles nightmare that is my dear friend Justin's inspired Paperback Fanatic!

This sounds like a good idea, but must be a bastard of work!
Still, looking for a specific writer or novel is sometimes a bit difficult to find. I always try the google search function, but it works a little bit odd at times.

I always try the google search function, but it works a little bit odd at times. The search function is . . . inadequate. If somebody knows where the thread is in which, last year, we discussed the covers of "gothic" novels from the 60s and 70s, please let me know.

i think that would be the Paperback Library thread, JoJo? for a far more substantial guide to these vintage gothics & goth roms i'd recommend sara's My Love Haunted Heart, fast become a favourite blog of mine.

My apologies if I should have added my recent Sarban post to a pre-existing Sarban thread (please feel free to relocate my post). I've never been quite sure whether the culture here was for new issues pertaining to previously discussed authors should be appended to pre-existing threads for said author, or posted as new threads. In most discussion forums I visit the latter would be the case, but the vault does seem different, more of a repository for browsing. The search function might not be the best (although it seems to be far superior to that on yahoo groups, which beggars belief) but the way the older threads are arranged does allow for easy access to semi-guided walks through discussions past, something much less easy to do on most other sites that i visit.

Oh gosh, I hope no-one thinks I'm being picky about new threads being started - it's just that I'm a lazy bleeder and if there's already a thread about a book I've enjoyed, I much prefer not putting down the details and just jumping in on a conversation already under way. And if I'm humming and hawing about a book or an author it's handy to be able to suss out what other Vaulters think, but only if I can find a related thread. I have never been steered wrong on anything on here; even if I disagree about the best story or find a book not my cup of tea, I can usually rely on Vault to tell me what's worth a read at all. I only picked Sarban because he was in my mind because Chris posted up about the ebooks. Actually I think it might work if we have a sign-up thread somewhere and each pick an author to trawl for. I promise not to pick someone who only wrote one story

That blog is indeed a great resource; thanks for bringing it to my attention! No, the thread I was thinking of was one in which I revealed the secret template for the "gothic" cover paintings: Woman fleeing from house in which exactly one window is lit. What I wanted to say was that I just discovered that Mary Stewart's NINE COACHES WAITING (1958), an early example of the genre, actually has a scene exactly like that: Otherwise the novel is very boring.

try this.
1. in google type
site:vaultofevil.proboards.com
2. add the name of the author you're looking for, eg
site:vaultofevil.proboards.com charles birkin
3. press the search button and marvel!
a little time consuming but certainly less so than compiling an a-z?
(i've just updated & pinned the search vault thread in the welcome section, and merged chris's sarban news & reviews into the existing 'the sound of his horn' thread, too)

Ah! Now that does the trick. Time consuming nothing, dem, even a congenitally bone-idle bugger like me can manage that. Ta.
