Uploaded with ImageShack.usKing's Witchfinder by Alexander Karol - New English Library 1975 No 3 in the imaginative and passionate series of the Restoration Period.
One-time pirates Sir Harry Strang and the Earl of Rochester return from their high-sea adventures to take to the waters at fashionable Deal. They discover that a local witch hunt is on and every beautiful young maiden in the district is under suspicion.
Only the torturing implements of the Witchfinder reveal the true identity of a witch. Sir Harry and his friend witness much human misery when they are asked to help a young woman , suspected of being in league with the devil ...Whilst I doub't this is on a par with James Darke's The Witches series ! , one can but hope. Numbers 1 and 2 of Nel's Restoration Series are Sword of Vengeance and Dark Lady.

a new one on me! we've had quite a bit of comment on the NEL Black Magic titles, and some day we'll have to list all the NEL 'live at the witch trials' paperbacks - they seem to have been something of a favourite with Peter Haining. thanks for posting, KC

A new one on me to Dem. Picked it up with a couple of Dion Fortunes the other day. Been reading a run of occult titles recently and a perusal of your brilliant nastynels.wordpress.com/ persuaded me to order Eric Ericson's The Sorcerer and David Gurney's The Conjurers. And speaking of witchfinders , I just finished Brian Ball's Evil Of Monteine ( the second Ruane the Witchfinder novel) . Loved it. Am now reading Evil Intent which is a 1960's police witch hunting procedural - CSI : Witchfinder?. KC

Ah, The Sorcerers is top notch, up there with Brian McNaughton and Gerald Suster in my book and you don't get much higher praise than that. i've not yet landed The Conjurers but if it's anything like The Evil Under The Water you're in for a weird time of it. What Dion Fortune's did you get? also, is it OK if i add your King's Witchfinder scan & blurb to Nasty Nels?

Of course you can add to the site - it's a pleasure to help !
The Dion Fortune's are The Demon Lover and The Winged Bull . I didn't know she was an occultist herself until i did some snooping online. The blurbs sounded okay - read any of her books?

thanks, mr sunshine crab. it now has pride of place on the , uh, 'site'. and here's the cover of book 2, scrounged from evil interweb and photo-shopped to within an inch of its life. Alexander Karol - Dark Lady (NEL, 1974) Now, Dion Fortune. i've had a copy of The Demon Lover hanging around for bloody centuries without ever getting stuck in and i can't figure out why as i like what i've read of her occult detective The Secrets Of Dr. Taverner well enough. maybe i'll get around to it once i've finished my current read - Stephen Laws' apocalyptic Chasm.

I like that cover thanks for filching it! Not sure when I'll dip into Dion Fortune either , depends if The Conjurers gets here before I finish Evil Intent ! I'm hoping it's the Nel '73 orange cover that's coming.
KC

I’ve read both of these and they’re great, particularly King’s Witchfinder, starring the fantastically named witchhunter, Deliverance Crudd. This guy takes his job very seriously - he even employs a 'canine confessor' so he can sentence to death a demon-possessed Alsatian dog. There’s a fun twist at the end too!
