Sparrowhawk by Paul Finch (Pendragon Press) James Higgins A festive feast to chill the blood. . .In the year 1843, embittered Afghan war veteran John Sparrowhawk is released from the debtor's prison by the beautiful and enigmatic Miss Evangeline.
Penniless and alone in the world, he takes employment with his mysterious benefactor, agreeing to stand guard over a house in Bloomsbury for the duration of the Christmas period.
Whilst London is gripped in the coldest winter in living memory, a supernatural entity stalks Sparrowhawk, cloaked by the mist, snow and the darkest Victorian streets in this traditional tale of terror, turmoil and torment.Front Cover Illustration by James Higgins. I've always been a fan of Paul Finch's work ever since I happened across his Ash-Tree Press book 'After Shocks' about ten years ago now and wondered why on earth his stories weren't being published in mass market paperback. In fact if there's anyone who deserves to have a collection on the shelves of the newsagents and railway station bookstalls of this land (amongst other reputable purveyors of quality horror) it's Mr Finch - his stuff is well written, accessible and immensely entertaining. And so is Sparrowhawk - an action-packed Xmas ghost story of a page turner that could so easily be a movie, or at least a decent BBC adaptation. I won't say any more about the plot than the blurb does but I really enjoyed this. And I think Pendragon Press may even have a few left.

I read this before Christmas and I loved it, too.
Great atmosphere, chilling imagery, historically fascinating. And I agree with John's comment - it would make a great tv adaptation.

Just started reading this and sincerely love all things Paul Finch (especially his Ash Tree offerings just because I love ghost stories and he does this type so well) so no surprise and I'm loving this as well.... now to find more time to read...
