Attempted checklist of 'Alfred Hitchcock' anthologies, 1945-80 Alfred Hitchcock - Stories he said they wouldn't let him do on TV - .... although they usually did. Despite the fact he probably never edited a book in his life, Hitch remains one of the all-time most prolific anthologists!
"The only grass that Alfred Hitchcock gets high on is the kind that grows in the cemetery, and the only acid that blows his mind is the sort that can be thrown in someone's face. Diabolical death is Alfie's special kick, and he wants you to enjoy it, too. For that purpose he's harvested a brand new crop of terror tales, and served them up to you with a grisly relish. Here is the master's personal choice of 15 spine-chilling spellbinders ....."Groovy blurb for
Alfred Hitchcock's Rolling Gravestones (Dell, 1971)
I've given it a ceiling of 1980 as that's the year Mr. Hitchcock passed away. As it's not beyond the realms of possibility that he never edited one of the anthologies attributed to him while he was alive, it's unlikely he had much of a hand in those published after his death, either. Anyway, i suspect this lot is just the tip of the iceberg, which is frightening. The more 'Give me Horror or give me death!' inclined among us needn't bother with too many of these, though those ghost-edited by Robert Arthur are usually worth taking a chance on. Information gathered from several sources with
Alfred's Place proving particularly helpful.
