I just had this as a Vine review from Amazon (yay, free books!) and enjoyed it so much I wanted to give it a bit of a boost. I hadn't read any of the author's work before, though on the strength of reading this I bought an omnibus of her first three Chronicles of Ancient Darkness to amuse the younger spawn while she has a poorly arm. It's a really quick read, concerning a British meteorological survey in the Arctic in 1937. It's not a gore-fest, but it was so well written, and built up the atmosphere so damn well, I couldn't put it down (and I don't mean that in the Stephen King style, as in I never picked it up but I was paid a lot to praise it). I really, really do recommend this one.

This one gets my vote too, although I have to admit to being biased. It's set in Spitsbergen in the perpetual dark of winter and I'm a great fan of wild Nordic places. Probably best read in winter (in low light)... There's a trailer you can watch here - www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oSOUtk1tdA

No! DARK MATTER is certainly very readable and atmospheric, and I had high hopes for it, but it works itself up to a major anticlimax. I had a much better ending in mind, in which {Spoiler}it turns out Gus and Algie never left, after all---Jack eventually realizes that he has killed them.

That would've been interesting. It might well have fitted with the diary format of the book, too, though I wonder how it'd mesh with the gay sub-text.

Apparently it's going to be made into a film (by DNA Films - who made 28 Days Later, Trainspotting, Shallow Grave, The Beach, Sunshine, etc).

A film has the potential to be creepy as hell...

Thoroughly enjoyed this one and just spotted that the author has a new one out :-)

Just add the covers for form's sake:
I made the mistake of starting Thin Air right after Dark Matter (how could I have resisted, the latter being so good?). Turns out the two books are very similar in terms of form (expedition journals), which means I lost interest in the second book after a while (my lack of mountaineering knowledge may also have been a factor). Perhaps I will go back to it a few years later. Excellent books, just don't read them together!
