Anne Billson - Dream Demon (Nel, 1989) Blurb She dug her fingernail into the face. As she ran it down the crack, a flake of porcelain came away, then another. Now, like peeling a hard boiled egg, she had laid bare half the cheek. Inside, the greyish-white stuff was soft. She snatched her finger away as something pulsed and moved. A fat, glistening maggot poked blindly out, wriggled and fell onto the carpet. Revolted, she stamped on it, smearing it into the pile. The doll's eyes stared up at her, blank and malevolent....
NOW A MAJOR FILM RELEASE FILMSCREEN PRODUCTIONS and BRITISH SCREEN in association with SPECTRAFILM present A PALACE PRODUCTION DREAM DEMON A film by HARLEY COKLISS Starring: KATHLEEN WILHOITE introducing JEMMA REDGRAVE with TIMOTHY SPALL and JIMMY NAIL Production Designer: HUGO LUCZYC-WYHOWSKI Photographed by: IAN WILSON. Music by: BILL NELSON Screenplay by: CHRISTOPHER WICKING and HARLEY COKLISS Produced by: PAUL WEBSTER. Directed by: HARLEY COKLISSAnne Billson's yuppie vampire novel Suckers was among my very top reads of 2009 (i operate 15 years behind everyone else) so was delighted to land a copy of this, her horror debut, from Riley Books in a bumper bundle that also contained a copy of the long-sought The Pike. The blurb doesn't give much away, and i never even knew it was filmed, but a quick google led me to this Trailer and the novel has shot up top of the ugly and intimidating to read pile as a result. i'm likely to start on in midweek, so before we begin, has anyone seen Dream Demon?

The blurb doesn't give much away, and i never even knew it was filmed, but a quick google led me to this Trailer and the novel has shot up top of the ugly and intimidating to read pile as a result. i'm likely to start on in midweek, so before we begin, has anyone seen Dream Demon? I've seen it! (You could have guessed couldn't you? ) I saw this at the cinema when it came out and it has to have been one of the most depressing and disappointing cinemagoing experiences of my life. British horror was just starting to make a comeback with Hellraiser (hooray!) and Palace Pictures, who had released Evil Dead and Nightmare on Elm Street in the UK & had made a lot of money from them had decided to make their own horror film. Instead of following Hellraiser's lead they decided to rip off Elm Street. And made one of the worst British horror movies ever. Dem, it's really, really awful. Jemma Redgrave and Kathleen Wilhoite are nauseating leads, Timothy Spall and Jimmy Nail are AWFUL comic relief, the script by Christopher "My screenplays are often a bit obscure" Wicking and Harley "Battletruck" Cokeliss is just terrible and the direction is rubbish. There's a great bit at the start where the bride slaps her husband's face and his head falls off and sprays her gown with blood but most of the time you'll be shouting at the screen. Tell me if the book's as bad.

Of course before Dream Demon Palace made The Company of Wolves, which was an up its own backside attempt at a werewolf picture if I've ever seen one. I even prefer Howling VI
That's enough of that - Lady P & I are off to Hay On Wye to look at dusty old paperbacks

Tell me if the book's as bad. After reading that little lot, i'm almost too terrified to even attempt it! After enjoying Suckers so, i've every faith in Anne Billson. The bit that has me slightly concerned is the dread "rip off of Nightmare on Elm Street" alert. I'm so hoping this is not a case of the film staying the least faithful to the novel. Ok here are our latest finds: The First Mayflower Book of Black Magic Stories - Michel Parry The 14th Fontana Great Ghost Stories - RCH New Writings in Horror & the Supernatural - David Sutton The Return Walter de la Mare Frighteners 1 & 2 Mary Danby I already had the Frighteners but these were in perfect condition for £2 each so I had to have them! We also got the Wordsworth Wheatleys - The Devil Rides Out & To the Devil A Daughter Glad you both came away with such a blinding haul! And a body can't have too many copies of Frighteners if you want my honest.
