Anybody seen this, got the DVD and watched a few nights ago, absolutely loved it, dark, bleak and set me thinking One must be Odin, what with him sacrificing himself etc

Here's an excerpt from my review from when we went to watch it at the cinema (on Viking Night!) last week:
Well, Lady P & I have just got back from what has to be the most unnerving, grim and believe it or not scariest film I have seen in several years.
Valhalla Rising is an unrelentingly dark Viking saga where very little happens in the way of plot but what does take place does so with such a sense of dreadful anticipation that we spent most of the movie on the edge of our seats. Mads Mikkelson stars as a brutal warrior who hooks up with a bunch of Christian Vikings seeking the holy land. It all goes wrong of course and the real appeal of this movie is the utterly unpleasant, utterly immersive emotional experience that results from this document of their ultimately hopeless quest. In fact I can honestly say I haven't felt this tense, unnerved or just plain scared during a film since I watched the uncut version of Ruggero Deodato's Cannibal Holocaust a few years ago.
I don't think this film is for everyone. In fact I was so deliciously unnerved by it that I have absolutely no intention of watching it again - it's that good.

I was going to see this, but all the reviews I have read up to now have been fairly negative - the words "ponderous" and "tedious" seemed to keep coming up. Maybe I will give the DVD a try.

You've even got me worried John...I'm still going to watch it though.

Sounds interesting. the last Viking movie I saw was "Hammer of the Gods", which was a sad, truly sad affair. On of those dire SciFi-channel originals.

Kim Newman gave it a good review, on Rotten Tomatoes it got 88%. I think it's a love it or hate it.

Watched it last night. Thought it was very dull. Seems it wasn't just the guys in the boat who had no idea where they were going.
Elricc - I am sure you are correct with the reference to Odin, but I have to say the actual point of the film completely escapes me.
