For the fan of action SF novels who's read everything from Starship Troopers to Dune you wont want to miss reading UK author Richard Morgan's three Takeshi Kovacs novels.
Altered Carbon. Broken Angels. (My fave of the three) Woken Furies.
Richard Morgan took the action SF world by storm when his first novel Altered Carbon was published.
SF noir with some of the most original ideas ever thought up for humanity's future.
Altered Carbon is a mix of SF and old fashioned Philip Marlowe detective story with the added twist of the human mind being re-sleeved into customised cloned bodies when a person is injured or killed or just wants a new body. The way Morgan describes it, it sounds so real you'll wonder why we can't already do it. Takeshi Kovacs is an ex-envoy. A killing machine in a cloned human(ish) body.
All three books are written in first person, past tense. And it's perfect for the way Tak relates to his futuristic world.
Altered Carbon is an ultra violent and sexy detective story.
Broken Angels is a military SF action/adventure. The best of the three books in my opinion. Tak and his comrades are hunting the ultimate treasure...a spaceship belonging to a mythical alien race...who vanished thousands of years before Terran's reached the stars.
Woken Furies sees Tak returning to his home world...over a hundred years after he left. Re-sleeved into a customised clone body and on a killing spree of epic proportions.
Take note: Morgan's novels are not just a quick read. There's a lot of interesting descriptive passages and ideas to get thru. But well worth the effort. Quite possibly the best SF novels written in the last ten years.
Morgan went on to write Black Man, which (my own opinion here) I thought wasn't anywhere near as good as his Tak Kovacs novels.
Now he's writing dark and dirty swordpunk fantasy...lets not even go there...and I'm afraid he's lost me until he returns to the Tak Kovacs books.
