Btw, is there a list of ebay handles on the forum? So you don´t get into those idiotic bidding wars? Good idea from Andy, perhaps we could have a members-only sub-board where a master list of ebay handles could be kept, similar to the one on the PC board?

very useful suggestion, gents. I've added a members only sub-section Here. No posts as yet, because even after all this time, I still haven't bought a book online or even opened an ebay account. If you want more privacy, there's a hide board option - "This board not show up on the main page or forum jump. The only way to access it will be by knowing the URL to the board" - or you could have it password protected. Let me know which you'd prefer.

Ebay handles are kept secret at Ebay now whilst bidding. You get called *bidder 1 or 2 or whatever* - only the winner is uncloaked. The only way not to tread on each others toes is to let folks know you are bidding in advance. The problem then is who saw an item first etc - who wants it more. I know a site where folks stake claims for Super Action Transfers and this method has reduced costs quite a bit - doub't it's worth it about books which is a bigger collector market...

Ade But that's only if the seller uses private bidding, isn't it Ade? Unless they've changed things since I was last on eBay. I think it's still the case that in most situations everyone can see who's bidding, but I may be wrong as I haven't been there for a while (well, a few weeks, anyway!). I must admit, though, I don't think I'd want my eBay id displayed on a forum. Not that I don't trust any of you guys - of course I do - it's just people looking in that I'd worry about. There are quite a few dodgy characters out there - spoof emails sent out trying to get personal info, etc. I'm just a bit wary of eBay generally, the internet, and making too much info available for those who know how to get hold of it to do so. Call me paranoid, but ...

I believe the idea has been selectively test driven and is now the modus operandi Caroline. I'll happily be proven wrong - but everything I've looked at in the last week seems to suggest this has become the system now.

That'll really annoy the eBay Autograph Collectors' Group, who make it their mission in life to contact anyone who is bidding on what appears to be a fake autograph! Maybe it's time I went back to eBay again - but hubby'll kill me if I start spending too much money there again ...

There's probably no full proof system then. Maybe we could create a kind of ad hoc private 'here' place where if people choose they can say I'm bidding and people can check if anyone is bidding. Attach it to the swap shop perhaps.

Sound suggestion Craig, stick it to the swapshop.

For a little while, I thought that Bidder 1 was following me. Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean that Bidder 1 isn't stalking me.
