Bad timing, I know, but I was working on this before all the recent nonsense .... 1. 'Norma N Johns' - Bodoman of Sor; Anonymous piss-take of John Norman's Gor novels. (Feb. 1977) 2. Peter Tremayne (ed.) - William Hope Hodgson: A Centenary Tribute 1877–1977: Hodgson's stories The Riven Night and The Phantom Ship, Tremayne's article William Hope Hodgson: His Life And Works (Nov. 1977) 3. Adrian Cole - Longbore the Inexhaustible (Feb. 1978). Some kind of epic fantasy satire. In light of recent events, the title seems uncannily prophetic. As does; 4. Michael Moorcock - Epic Pooh: According to the BFS site, "Extracted from a larger volume, Heroic Dreams, Enchanted Worlds (Pierrot Publishing Ltd), a critical analysis of “epic fantasy”, but written with a general reader in mind." (Feb., 1978) 5. Ramsey Campbell - Through the Walls: His much-anthologised short story makes its first appearance. (June 1978) 6. Jo Fletcher (ed.) - Masters of Fantasy 1: Peter Tremayne: Introduced by Brian Lumley, includes a bibliography, Tremayne's short The Last Gift and an interview wherein the author discusses his Dracula novels. 7. Masters of Fantasy 2: August Derleth: Introduced by Ramsey Campbell ( Derleth As I Knew Him), Derleth's short Stuff Of Dreams, essays by Nic Howard and a chronological bibliography. 8. Stan Nicholls (ed.) - Gothique: 20th Anniversary Issue (British Fantasy Society Booklet #8, 1985) David Griffiths Introduction: Stan Nicholls - The Enemy Within The Gothique Film Society Alan White - Lon Chaney Interview: "An award? An Award For What?" (from 1969, but previously unpublished) Art Portfolio: With an introduction by Julian Dubois: Above The Clouds Midnight Is Walking. Ernest Harris - Certain Disturbing Tendencies: Some Personal Reactions To Current Trends In Horror Movies Ramsey Campbell, David Sutton, Martin Lock - 2005I don't like to say it, and i'm not even sure why, but this celebration of one of the earliest UK horror film 'zines doesn't work for me at all - could be that it's about two killer articles short of the real deal, or maybe it just hasn't worn well. But that cover - and the artwork on the backside which would doubtless cause photobucket to throw a fit - has seen it remain in my collection while several other magazines went walkabout. David A. Riley on Gothique: 9. Peter Coleburn (ed.) - Winter Chills #1: stories by R. Chetwynd-Hayes, Ramsey Campbell, Sydney J. Bounds, Peter Tremayne, David Sutton & Brian Lumley. Details here: 10. Richard Dalby (ed.) - Masters of Fantasy 3: MR James 11. Steve Holland (ed.) - Fantasy Fanzine Index: Vol 1 (British Fantasy Society, 1987) Craig Forrester As you'd expect from Mr. Holland, an invaluable index to such publications as Back Brain Recluse, Dark Dreams, Haunted Library, Dark Horizons, Fantasy Tales & Co. up to 1987. Full breakdown to follow, index to Fantasy Fanzine Index likewise. 12. Winter Chills #2 There are at least another twelve (including two different #18's), but the only one i'm familiar with is David Cowperthwaite's Tanith Lee; Mistress Of Delerium (1993). There's a full (?) listing on the British Fantasy Society site, where you'll also find notes on some of their later chapbooks which include one from Britain's Prince of Chills: R. Chetwynd-Hayes - Shocks (The British Fantasy Society, Dec. 1997) Introduction - David J. Howe
Christmas Eve ( The Night Ghouls), 1975 The Fly-by-Night ( The Monster Club), 1976[/i]) Head of the Firm ( The Unbidden), 1971 The Day of the Underdog ( Tales of Fear and Fantasy), 1977

Riley on Gothique: Hee! I attended the Gothique Film Society for the first time ever last year (The Dark Light/Captain Kronos - Vampire Hunter) They're showing Brides Of Dracula in December this year.

..... and for those who've not seen it, founder member Stan Nicholls has a page devoted to the Gothique fanzine with covers, contents and a gallery at Here Be Dragons.

Having earlier this year taken over being editor of the BFS Bulletin (now called Prism) for the second time after a gap of 35 years, I posted some pictures of the Bulletins that I produced with co-editor Jim Pitts back in 1974-75 on the BFS site. These may be of interest here too: And this is a leaflet that was issued right at the very beginning to drum up support for the BFS, then called the British Weird Fantasy Society: Things have changed a bit since thoser days. The first professionally printed Bulletin was a whole 12 pages. Prism is now 56. Something that size back then, at printing costs in those days, would have bankrupted the BFS outright. David

Things have changed a bit since thoser days. The first professionally printed Bulletin was a whole 12 pages. Prism is now 56. Something that size back then, at printing costs in those days, would have bankrupted the BFS outright. David thanks for posting these, David. i'm guessing cost wise it must have been murder getting anything out before the humble photocopier revolutionised independent publishing. David Cowperthwaite (ed.) - Tanith Lee: Mistress Of Delirium (British Fantasy Society: Special Booklet #18, 1993) Dallas Goffin David Cowperthwaite - Preface
Peter Relton - Shadows On Stained Glass: The Secret Books Of Paradys Mike Ashley - The Towers Of Tanith: Aspects Of Imagery In The Fairy Tales Of Tanith Lee. John Howard - A Pre-Raphaelite Novel Of Love & Death. Tanith Lee's Sung In Shadow Peter Relton - Memory Is The Only Time Machine: The Silver Sky Tanith Lee - Il Bacio (Il Chiave) Mike Ashley - Tanith Lee: A Bibliography
Artwork: Dallas Goffin, Chrissie Demant, Tanith Lee, Aubrey Beardsley, Byram Shawthe bride of demonik A fond tribute to the author, lovingly conceived and written, all rounded off with Mike Ashley's typically exhaustive bibliography. But never mind all that. Which gloomy black-clad bastard was the artist's model for the beautiful and sinister Valore in Il Bacio (Il Chiave), then, eh? Answer me that! the bride of demonik (again) some more; 12. Winter Chills # 2. No idea of the line-up. Most likely excellent if the debut is anything to go by. 13. Mystique # 1. Another mag. No idea of the line-up/ content. 14. Richard Dalby (ed.) - Masters of Fantasy 4: GG Pendarves : The Devil’s Graveyard. Tribute to Weird Tales & Co. author of horror, fantasy, Sci-Fi & Co. 15. Russell Flinn - Stirring Within. No idea. A story? 16. Dallas Clive Goffin - Legends of Fogrophol. 17. Bookshelf # 1. Yet another mag. No idea of the line-up/ content. 18. Mark Morris - Birthday. Short story from a great modern author. 18. Tanith Lee: Mistress Of Delirium. Yep, two #18's. 19. David Howe (ed.) - Suzanne J Barbieri; Clive Barker: Mythmaker For The Millennium. The BFS waved goodbye to the trad small press booklet format and went for the proper paperback approach instead. Stellar contributors include Michael Marshall Smith, Peter Atkins, Les Edwards and Pete Queally. 20. Simon Clark & Stephen Laws - Annabelle Says. This one sounds fun. The gents spent the weekend at the reputedly haunted Arreton Manor. They wrote this while waiting for the ghosts to make their move. 21. Hugh Lamb (ed.) - S Baring‑Gould: Colonel Halifax’s Ghost Story22. Mike Chinn (ed) - John R Oram: Outsiders "Essays on classic horror images" according to the BFS site who ought to know. 23. Jan Edwards and John Carter (eds.) - Silver Rhapsody: 25 years of the BFS
