Interesting to note that in the acknowledgements "Jugged Hare" is credited to both Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine and Pan Book of Horror, in which it appeared, of course, in the first volume. What I wonder is - did it appear in Ellery first?
I read an anthology that included several of these way back in the mid (or early? twas a long time ago) Seventies. Joan Aiken seems to be almost forgotten, but maybe that's just me not paying attention again. Her stories were so unusual, with a very uncanny or what was once called "fey" in the sense of "eldritch" vibe.
