I read an anthology that included several of these way back in the mid (or early? twas a long time ago) Seventies. Joan Aiken seems to be almost forgotten, but maybe that's just me not paying attention again. Her stories were so unusual, with a very uncanny or what was once called "fey" in the sense of "eldritch" vibe.
I should probably revisit, one of these days...
