Just picked up this little beauty and don't see it on the checklist - so, is it a Clifton-Dey or not??

It looks to me like it is, surely no one else would paint all that rope!! But I don't want to put it into my Clifton-Dey set on Flickr without being 100% certain. Anyone know??

I would say it's not a Clifton-Dey but Tony Masero doing a RCD impersonation.

The figure work looks too stiff, the folds of the cloth aren't rendered as naturally as RCD, and the carving on the wood is too ornate compared with most of his work.

You didn't mention the date Sev but I suspect it could also be after RCD left NEL....

I also would say this is a Masero. His colors are quite different as RCDs.

Here is a nice example of before and after.

RCDs cover for Black Queen was used in Germany for the long running pulp series SEEWÖLFE (Sea Wolves).

Either the artist or editorial bought the picture and tinkered with it or swiped it.

Sea Wolves No.361, 1983, cover presumbly by Firuz Askin, Battle for Tortuga

Sea Wolves was published from 1975 to 1990 for 760 weekly issues. It told the adventures of elisabethan pirate Philip Hasard Killigrew and his crew, a contemporary of Francis Drake. The writers played a bit loose with history to keep the series going, from fighting the spanish armada to looking for the northwest passage or discovering Australia. It was very tongue-in-cheek, very macho, lots of fist-fights and sea battles, but fun to read, at times even humorous.

The Black Queen decipted on the cover became a major villian for a time, a former slave named Black Queen terrorising the caribean with her henchman Caligula. The character was shown on a few covers.

No. 426, The Hostage

The majority of the covers were done by an artist named Firuz Askin, who did hundreds of covers for publisher Pabel/Moewig. He had quite a talent for historical sea-adventures and did some great work. Here are a few examples.




This series is still a fond memory for many fans.
