Ah, that's great. The Christine Campbell Thomson covers are the best. I'll have to pick them up some time - I've only got those crappy 1970s reprints.

I was interested in pulphack's post in the Arrow thread about paperback and hardback publishers. He's right that many of the paperback publishers were brought out by traditional hardcover publishers - Transworld created Corgi in 1951. Around the same time Collins brought out Fontana, Hutchinson brought out Arrow, Hodder brought out Pocket (which later became Coronet). Digit Books was owned by Brown Watson. Granada acquired Panther in 1965 (which had been set up by a couple of ex-servicemen). I think Four Square became New English Library. Sphere was owned by Thomson. Mayflower was an offshoot of Dell in the US. Something like that anyway...

this just gives me a chance to say hello and welcome james - great stuff about Horowitz publications; i was only aware of their western lines from reading dave whitehead's column in Paperback and Pulp Fiction a decade or so ago.

the differences between those p/b lines from h/b houses and those that originated in p/b are makred - have you ever read Steve Holland's The Mushroom Jungle? much talked about on here, but not lately - a study of the men and words behind the boom in p/b oublishing post wwII that shaped the era we love. well worth tracking down if you haven't!

I haven't read The Mushroom Jungle - I'll do a search and see what it is. The only paperback history I've got is Schreuders' The Book of Paperbacks, which seems to focus on the US.

I'm lucky to live 100 metres from a chap named Graeme Flanagan, who did the Australian Vintage Paperback Guide for Gryphon books back in 1994. Graeme has an incredible collection of paperback pulps in his garage, not just Australian stuff. His focus is crime, not so much horror, and his website, which he has been updating recently is www.graemeflanagan.com Well worth a look for the covers. I think Graeme used to contribute to Gary Lovisi's Paperback Parade. If anyone's interested I interviewed Graeme for a fairly new journal called Studies in Australian Weird Fiction #3, which only seems to available from the publisher, Equilibrium Books.

I'm also a big fan of anthologies and especially vintage paperback anthologies - so I'm a perfect fit for Vault of Evil! I flogged a lot of paperbacks a few years ago to take advantage of some small press discount sales, but I'm slowly building up again. I particularly liked the 1970s Panther titles, eg the Clark Ashton Smith books with the Bruce Pennington covers.

I'm slowly trawling through the site and I'm finding that it's incredibly thorough - can't see many gaps at all.

James, next time you see Graeme, you might like to tell him there's a bloke in East London swears by his Robert Bloch: A Bio-Bibliography. Picked it up maybe ten years ago along the Charing Cross Road - didn't even know the booklet existed up until then - and still find myself referring back to it whenever Bloch's name comes up on here.

Hugh lamb's anthologies certainly do it for me. The Victorian Nightmares paperback was the first book i ever went out of my way to buy after reading a copy from the local library - imagine getting hooked on the genre through H. B. Marriott-Watson's The Devil On The Marsh! I still think it's his finest collection, though Wave Of Fear doesn't take any prisoners either and they're all "good", whatever that is. How heartening that Wordsworth have reprinted so many books by 'Hugh Lamb authors'!

Yes, the board is a bit on the .... sprawling side. The thing is, every once in a while, once it's more or less been decided to stick with what we've got, someone will open our eyes to a whole new world of fantastic stuff - your Oz pulps are a fine example - and how can we not run with it!

That's him! He occasionally lets me look longingly at his signed Arkham House The Opener of the Way. Another guy he used to correspond with was Fritz Leiber, and he's got a signed Night's Black Agents amongst other things. Amazing stuff.
