Oh no! Me and Lord P are up against Stephen King for Best Collection! He's not British you know Still, good to see so many Vaulters there. Including Mr Riley in the best short story category. You know it's possible to still add choices. There's a space for it. Hope's not lost yet for Charles and The Black Books. Mark S.

Curiously, though I have copies of yours and Lord P's books, I don't have the one by that Yankee upstart Stephen King. You're just lucky, Mark, you're not up against the likes of Richard Staines. That would be competition for you.

Stains never stood a chance. Too unpredictable. Too anti-establishment. Too much a threat to the status quo.
The word on the street has it that Stephen King's supposed "application" for British Citizenship was smoothed through on the instruction of the top brass at MI6 who are relying upon a proven crowd pleaser of his stature to distract from Stains' scandalous omission from the 'Life-time Achievement' nominees. It's a damage limitation exercise, a cover up at the highest level and, frankly, it stinks.
Ooh, well done Mark, the Right Hon. Lord Probert, Mr. Riley and those persons who regard themselves as "ex-Vault members" on making the cut. Black Books apart, of the omissions, the one that leapt out at me was in the best artist category: where the fuck is Moody?

The BB ommisions are very strange. And no Mudie is a travesty. And no Paperback Fanatic? Someone will have to join up and nominate all of these for next years list. Who's up for being a plant?

Alas, Mr Staines would only be eligible for the Karl Edward Wagner Award and that's voted on by the BFS committee. And they're in a conspiracy of silence about his very existence! As for Mortbury, Black Books, Paperback Fanatic & Paul Mudie, I'll be adding them to the shortlist vote in the blank space provided for such things. I didn't vote for anything on the long list (I forgot all about the long list coming up, doh! Last year I put PF and BB on there). But as I said, all's not lost. I'm not currently a BFS member but anyone who attended the last Fantasycon can vote, as can anyone who's booked for the 2009 one. Let's roll, people! Mark S.

I heard they were a conspiratorial lot. Can't remember who told me, though it could have been someone called Barker... David

And no Paperback Fanatic? Paperback Fanatic I can understand as there was a long interval between #7 and #8 which was released just before Christmas, doubtless too late to come in for consideration. Be interesting to see if it makes the best magazine listing next year though. I'm guessing British publisher is the reasoning behind Stephen Kings inclusion among the candidates for 'best collection'?

I'm guessing British publisher is the reasoning behind Stephen Kings inclusion among the candidates for 'best collection'? I'm not sure there is any rule about an author, publisher, or anyone connected with the work having to be British to appear in the BFS awards? I may be wrong, but I've never noticed any such rule in the blurb about the awards. I think it's a global thing - anyone can be nominated. There has been some heated debate at several times recently over whether their "best novel" award should really be named after an American (August Derleth).

I see one of The Thinking Man's Crumpet's contributors is in the running for 'Best Short Fiction', so well done Caz, Coral and Marie O' Regan. Just been browsing the BFS page - pulphack's new novel reviewed! - and, i must say, Fantasycon 18-20th September at the Britannia Hotel, Notts, looks tempting. Among the Guests of Honour: Ian Watson and ..... Brian Clemens!

I see one of The Thinking Man's Crumpet's contributors is in the running for 'Best Short Fiction', so well done Caz, Coral and Marie O' Regan. Yes, Marie's in with a shout for that one. But not with the story she had in TTMC, I hasten to add - Coral and I can't take credit for that, unfortunately! Just been browsing the BFS page and, i must say, Fantasycon 18-20th September at the Britannia Hotel, Notts, looks tempting. Among the Guests of Honour: Ian Watson and ..... Brian Clemens! Oh, I thought I'd mentioned Brian Clemens at FCon here before, but perhaps I haven't? Yes, I'm very much looking forward to that. My ticket is already booked! ;D
