A good editorial here, perhaps by a pseudonymous Jack Vance? I'm guessing this because Vance was meticulous and each story has good explanatory preface I love this collection, not least for having the longest title in the world and a clever little picture but also for containing stories that are not mysteries at all. 'The Post Mortem Murder' Sinclair Lewis - this is a mystery. Academic discovers a lost poet of incredible brilliance but who killed him. Great fun finding out. 'Ransom' by Pearl Buck is simply a psychological and moral examination of the parents of a kidnapped child

Spent ages trying to work out how to make this image smaller but I'm afraid I lost. Sorry
