Don't usually pay much attention to what's going on at MySp*c* these days, but every once in a while i catch up on the blog posts and, for once, something of interest. Daniel McGachey - THEY THAT DWELL IN DARK PLACES and other Ghost StoriesCover painting, "Dr. Lawrence - An Informal Portrait", by Julia Jeffrey. Cover design by Dav “This is a ghost story about ghost stories. It tells a tale about the telling of tales, and of the need, the absolute necessity, for stories that strike fear into men’s hearts; stories that delve into the unknown and the uncanny…”
… and in most of the thirteen stories in this collection, the telling of ghostly tales plays a vital part.
Here are stories told by firelight in isolated cottages, by lantern-light on storm-lashed beaches, by gaslight in scholars’ studies and clubrooms, or by twilight in libraries and in lonely asylum cells.
Here are stories of things that crawl stealthily across moonlit lawns; of legends it is better to remember, and of relics that are best left forgotten in the dark; of the malice of objects that are not as inanimate as they might seem, and of ancient tragedies re-enacted before helpless and horrified eyes.....
Here are stories of… Strange books unearthed from the college library foundations, and the dreadful shadowy form that seeks their return… The man with no sense of humour who plays a joke that has deadly results… The legendary gambling club where something far more precious than money is at stake… .... The book of ghost stories whose contents prove more than usually absorbing for the unfortunate reader… The solitary lighthouse in the middle of a treacherous sea, and the nightmare that awaits its keepers one stormy night, when someone comes knocking at the door... The painter whose commission for an unseen sponsor produces horrifying portraits that capture more than a mere likeness of the subjects… The old house with an alarming history, and the professor who is drawn to it in hope of fulfilling his overwhelming ambition to finally see a ghost… And the gentlemen’s club where the patrons gather on Hallowe’en night to exchange ghoulish tales, and where a very special tale of horror must yet be told.
Here are stories of phantoms and demons; of those who are haunted by them, and those, like Dr. Lawrence, the antiquarian scholar, who seek them and face them. Here are stories of They that Dwell in Dark Places!
(A new collection of short stories, with illustrations by Julia Jeffrey, coming soon from DARK REGIONS PRESS.) I gather from Lurker (for, to those who've not yet had the pleasure of the Vincent Scarybloke experience, it is he) that we still have a while to wait until the release date, so perhaps he'll be good enough to give us the details as and when? From what i've read of Dan's work in the Black Book's and 1st BHF Book of Horror, this is very much a collection to look forward to. Well done, Lurks!

Thanks, guys. And thanks, dem, for posting this. It's a bit weird seeing my name in the subject line like that, I must say! As dem says, the release date is still a while away - May, barring any unforeseen problems, for the Deluxe edition (with two extra stories) and limited edition hardback, with the paperback following a few months later. Some of the stories will be familiar from the Black Books, BHF books and Filthy Creations ('The Mound', which debuted here in The Vault), but there's a lot of new stuff there, and the past few months have been a very busy time. I'm particularly chuffed that one of my oldest friends, Julia Jeffrey, has provided an excellent cover (featuring Dr. Lawrence), plus some very atmospheric illustrations for some of the stories. And a name VERY familiar to all here is providing the foreword. I'll keep you posted on developments.

Sorry to bump my own thread, but the cover for "They That Dwell In Dark Places", featuring Julia Jeffrey's superb painting, "Dr. Lawrence - An Informal Portrait", is now up on the Dark Regions site (though there may be some final design adjustments). Just click on the thumbnail in the row of covers to get a closer look, and to find out the name of the author of the foreword. www.darkregions.com/index.html

You're right about the cover, Dr T. The new version is far more in keeping with the stories. In fact the black border is influenced by the Fontana Books of Great Ghost Stories, which is very apt, I think. Dark Regions are going for a more traditional supernatural anthology feel for all of the books from their new Ghost House imprint.
And Ben, he was a bit of a surprise for me too. It's very odd to have a character in your head suddenly put into visuals by someone else. Though Julia has done a tremendous job, and this is how I now see the good doctor.

For those interested, there's some further information on the collection (and, unfortunately, its author ) on the new-look Dark Regions site - including a sample story to download, "The Mound" (the shortest story in the book, and probably familiar to some people here through its appearance in the Filthy Creations thread and then in the magazine itself). www.darkregions.com/they_that_dwell_in_dark_places.htmlIt's slightly later than I'd initially thought, but the book should be available pretty soon, now, as I've seen all the layout and design work, done my proof-reading, and I've just got through signing the signature pages that go in the deluxe and hardback editions (and the first 100 paperbacks). Still looking forward to holding an actual copy in my hands, I'll admit.

When the publisher e-mailed me earlier in the week, I was told the books are currently printed and now being bound.
Not having gone through the ordering process, I'd assumed it would be made clear that the book is currently at the pre-order stage. Looks like this isn't the case. I'll get in touch with them later today, as it's not so great if folk are left wondering what happened to their order.
Sorry about that, John.

Oh that's ok, but you really can't tell from the website if it's out or not.
Anyway I'm really looking forward to it! Are you coming to World Horror?
