Why the checklist? because you've had many a magazine claims to be "the new
Weird Tales" (some of which actually have the front to call themselves
Weird Tales: only the Robert Weinberg and Lin Carter edited versions came close), just as you've had at least one modern anthology series which promoted itself as in the tradition of the
Not At Night series. worthy enterprises all, but for this reader, the magazines that came close to emulating what Farnsworth-Wright and Christine Campbell Thomson achieved in their very different ways are
Shock and, specifically, Robert A. W. Lowdnes'
Startling Mystery Stories and
Magazine Of Horror. its damning with faint praise to suggest that Donald Wollheim's
Avon Fantasy Reader acted as a mere bridge between
Weird Tales/
Not At Night and
Shock/ Lowdnes' various ventures - it remains a brilliant magazine in its own right - but this is the world according to what goes on in my head. With
Avon Fantasy Reader Wollheim introduced a magazine which was pure pulp reprint. There is no editorial, no interior illustrations, no readers section - but for one essay and a handful of weird poems it really is all story, 173 of them by my reckoning, the vast majority judiciously selected from the finest pre-WWII fantasy and SF pulps including
Weird Tales,
Amazing Stories,
Blue Book. Consult the checklist and we find a s considerable number of these authors graced Christine Campbell Thomson's between the wars collections (often with the same stories) and even more showed up in Lowdnes' magazines through the 'sixties. in short, i reckon it is very worthy of Vault's attention.
