Please bear with me as I'm new to the Forum. Curt Purcell (of Groovy Age of Horror blog) recommended you guys to me.
I was asking him whether he knew of a paperback called, I think, Lamia. My memory says it was one of those Mayflower/Sphere/NELs
I think this a sc-fi novel from the 1960s (rather than horror per se) Very sexy book showing on the cover naked ladies....WITH TAILS! It was a normal paperback bought in England. It was my elder brother's and he had it in his collection of Heinleins, Asimovs etc all dated around the 1960s (I still have some of those!) The cover was of three (?) naked ladies with tails. My memory says it was in the style of a Boris painting, so very naturalistic. Unfortunately the story itself had eluded me. But...was it that men found the Lamia irresistible? I remember that when I first heard the group Genesis "Lamb lies down on Broadway" track Lamia in the 70s, I was thinking of this book so maybe the creatures were lamia rather than the title - you know what memory is like!
Any help identifying it would be gratefully received

Hi and welcome. I am about the least qualified to speak here - in he Vault school I'm more of a deranged janitor than a teacher - but for some reason i am thinking 'sirens of titan' here by Kurt Vonnegit. Why I don't know

Hello, I'm new here myself. Just registered in order to answer your question I think... though I've been lurking around in the shadows for ages...
Anyway.. your description triggered a memory of having seen this book cover so I've just been and checked my book covers file and I think you are talking about... The Lani People by J F Bone published by Bantam Many naked girls (with tails) on a red background and some kind of flying ship whizzing by above I'll try and post the cover but as I'm new and have never done such a thing before it might not work straight away....bare with me...

back again. No.. it's too late- nearly 1 pm- or I'm too stupid to figure it out at any time of the morning but if you go to: www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/and look under alphabetical authors list for J F Bone you will find the cover pictured there along with his other stuff. goodnight Jack

Really appreciate you took the time and trouble to put us out of our misery, Jack as it didn't look like anyone was gonna get it. Great cover, too.

The LANI people sounds a bit like LAMIA!!!! Thank you so much - another childood mystery solved. The cover is similar to the one in my head right now, but the spaceship isn't flying in my version....but then I saw Lamia!!! Also thanks Craig for the other links. Bless you lot! back again. J F Bone's Lani People seems to fit the remembered cover best. But if you're interested, below is Lamia by Tristan Travis, Star 1984 - first published 1983. Tristan Travis is probably a pseudonym; copyright is ascribed to R Keating Bolen. I thought the cover art was similar to that of 'Michael Slade's' Headhunter. (Star 1985) The lamia was also a form of bloodsucker in Tim Powers' The Stress of Her Regard (Grafton 1989)
