Into the Out of by Alan Dean Foster.
(Normally a sci-fi author, who did a good job of novelising the Alien series from movies into books.)
I wasn't really sure where to put Into the Out of.
It's not sci-fi...but not quite true horror either. Kind of hard to find a shelf for it.
The best I can do is call it eerie action/horror and suspense.
Joshua Oak, worn out FBI agent, is contacted by a Maasai witch doctor in regards to saving the world. (As happens to all of us, at one time or another I expect?) Teaming up with the nominated hapless female co-star, Josh and she follow the witch doctor back to Africa. The Shentani are about to break into the world en masse. African demons, they have been wandering around the world in dribs and drabs for centuries. Subtly manipulating political parties on Earth, in the hopes of starting another world war, their plan to begin a nuclear holocaust...after which they will swarm from their world...the Out Of, into our world and rampage merrily left and right. As you do. You know that bit of black rubber tire you see on the side of the road? Probably a disguised Shentani. You know all those people who disappear off the face of the earth every year? Yep...waylaid and gobbled up by the Shentani. You know that stewadess who disappeared from Flight 246? Yep. Shentani popped up out of the toilet bowl halfway thru the flight, and dragged her down the toilet bowl and back into their world. No honest. I read that in the novel, must be true.
Far fetched isn't the word. But loads of weirdness and action (which is what I like). Being a professional author Foster has provided descrpitions and dialogue of a decent standard.
Some people have even claimed this is Foster's best novel, for originality and ideas.
I enjoyed it a lot when I first read and have read it several times since. Worth getting from a used bookshop or a used online bookshop. It came out in both hardback and paperback.
Cheers: Jaq.
