Where did the story they were planning to ditch it originate from, Caroline? It seems to me that Robinsons are doing well - there's even a separate department for the Mammoth books. I'm not disputing what you say but the #18th book just won a prestigious British Fantasy Award and credit-crunch apart, why would they stop a series on #19 ?

From the BFS board here, Dem: www.britishfantasysociety.org/bfsdiscuss/index.php?topic=1650.0I'm assuming the guy concerned - who's just been to FCon - knows that this is true. I wouldn't have thought it's just a rumour. In fact, I'd wrongly assumed (without checking - doh!!) that this was what Martin's post was about on the other thread, so I've been talking complete nonsense there - I'll go and delete my rubbish on that thread. But, as far as I'm aware, this is serious. Jones has managed to pursuade them to do #20, but that'll be it!

Thanks for the link caz, and well done to Mr. P. Campbell of the BFS for raising the alert in his excellent post! I note that he too has had his reservations about the selections over the years but it would be a dreadful shame to lose the series. If there's one thing Vault excel at it's jumping bandwagons so we really should get behind this save the mammoth best horror's campaign! Without wishing to be alarmist, I wonder if it's just the Jones books or all the horror titles which are under threat? I ♥ Robinson Mammoth's! thread

Here's an update on this one for you all. I've had an email from Paul in which he clarifies the situation - where the info about BNH under threat comes from. He says as follows:
I saw the posts you did over there concerning Best New Horror 19 and the guy asking where this information came from: if you wish, feel free to let him know that it comes from the horse's mouth itself; Mr Stephen Jones. I've had the pleasure of talking to Steve at length over the past few Fantasycons and when he dropped this bombshell on me this year I was gutted; hate to see the series cancelled. Have no idea if it affects the rest of Robinson's mammoth horror titles, but definitely sales of BNH 19 will dictate whether or not it will continue after Volume 20. Also, why not encourage people on the Vault Of Evil forum to post a review of the book on Amazon?
So there you have it. A good idea about the Amazon reviews too if anyone wants to do this. I'm hoping Paul will join us in the Vault at some point too!

Thanks Caroline, and thanks to Paul for the additional info. I don't know about Amazon - i always think our reviews are more likely to put people off! - but another place you might like to drop some positive comment is on the horror section of Constable Robinson itself. If they see the books are appreciated, they might be more inclined to keep running with them.

Very true about Amazon reviews, Dem - that might not be such a good idea. I've seen a post on the BFS board that even a good review that mentions just a few niggling points can put buyers right off!
But the Constable Robinson site is a good place to target - I didn't know about that.

No more Best New Horror? That really is a frightening prospect ...
If the worst does happen and #20 proves to be the series' swan song, it will mean Datlow's horror selections for YBF&H will be the only annual selection of the best horror fiction from the previous year. There is supposed to be a Horror: Best of the Year series from Prime, but last year's volume never appeared, and I have no idea if/when this year's volume (to be edited by Stefan Dziemianowicz, covering 2007) will be published. Compare that to SF and fantasy, which are covered by at least three annual year's best volumes each.
I really do believe there's so much great short horror fiction being published right now that the genre not only deserves but needs Best New Horror. A single year's best volume with only half its contents devoted to horror simply isn't good enough.

Well said! Has anyone put a comment on the horror section of Constable Robinson yet. Nobody seems to want to be the first.

Has anyone put a comment on the horror section of Constable Robinson yet. Nobody seems to want to be the first. Paul Campbell has submitted his comment, but I think it has to be approved by them before it appears on the site. So there might be some others which are still awaiting approval too. I was going to wait till I'd read at least part of the book myself! But please, everyone, go ahead and comment on their site. It really would be such a shame to lose this anthology - another nail in the coffin of horror shorts.

I submitted a comment on the Robinson website as well, but as carolinec says, Robinson have to 'approve' them before they appear.
Let's hope they're inundated!

I put one on for Peter Haining's Mammoth Haunted House Stories some time ago and received a very kind email for taking the trouble. Patience, patience! You can't blame them for moderating it - just imagine what their spam would be like if they didn't! Ain't it lovely to see horror fans getting motivated!
