First, you'll need somewhere to host your pictures: Photobucket and Imagecave are two of the most popular, both offer free accounts and are easy to use. For this example, we'll use photobucket, though the principal is the same for both. Once you've opened your account, upload some photo's from your desktop. Make sure you own the copyright, like we always do! Now you've uploaded your photo, you'll see three sets of code underneath it. In photobucket, the one you want is the third from the bottom, IMG CODE. Copy this, save it in notepad or wherever so that it's ready for you to cut and and paste into your post. That's it! PS: I usually centre mine, though it's up to you whether you find that neccessary. The code for the chilling photo from Dr. Terror's House Of Horrors (above) looks like this: [center] [img]http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y218/haloofflies/drterror1.jpg[/img] [/center] And remember: Hot-linking is bandwidth theft is illegal. Don't do it!

I hate to sound dim-witted, but how do I know if a photo is copyrighted? I'd like to post with book photos included, but my scanner is dead and I'm sure my digital camera photos have too many pixels for a post. Sorry for being so techno-challenged.

you're not being dim-witted at all, asenath, it's a sensible question.
We tend to scan our own where possible, but if you use an image you found elsewhere, it's courteous to add a link to the source. A big part of what we're about is cover scans, which, of course remain the copyright of the original artists/ photographers/ publishers, etc. . though in six years i can't remember any objections to our reproducing them. Certain publishers have even encouraged us to keep going!
golden rule still stands: NO HOTLINKING.
hope this helps

Thanks so much for your explanation, Dem. I just opened an account with Photonucket--kinda fun learning how to use it. So far I have successfully posted an avatar! Yay! What is hotlinking?

i'm glad you brought it up, because i really should have put this in the original post. Hot linking is linking directly to an image on somebody else's website. It puts a strain on their bandwidth, makes their pages slow to load - it's also illegal. nobody likes it. Host the image through ph*tob*cket/ similar, or upload it as an attachment and everyone's happy.

It's not a dumb question Asenath. I am down at the moron end of computer knowledge and I think I might unwittingly have done this on my own website - I'd better have a look through... didn't even know that was hotlinking...

Sadly I'm finding that my Photobucket links are not working... I can see the copied link, but the image does not appear in the post for some reason...

Photobucket does not seem to work, so tried "imgur", but that doesn't work either. The link copies ok, but no image appears in my posts. Any thoughts by any image-posting experts out there?

I always use Postimage, a free image hosting site. Never had a problem.

As far as I know, Photobucket doesn't do Linking for free any longer.
I also have often problems with this. Currently I use Image BB, but without registration, just for Upload. (I had some easy to use non-registrational Link-Uploader in the Netherlands, but this vanished without a trace. Links still work, though) I don't know what happens with the scan after this, and of course I don't have access after posting any longer. But I really don't want to register here and there, and I don't delete my re-sized scans.
After you copied the link into the insert image pop-up, delete everything before the https, brackets and all, also everything after the .jpg or whatever format you use. Works for me. I guess there is a possibilty to do without this tinkering, but I never found the right manual. I find the BBCode page much clearer for work, I just control after a moment on preview.
Maybe this helps.

After using Ph*t*f*ck*t and F**ckr I now user MGER, which works okay - though I'm waiting for the day when they start charging too.
