A. C. Crispen - V (Nel, 1984, 1988) Blurb: Try To Resist
They arrived - tens of thousands of extraterrestrial beings - in huge spaceships the size of a modern metropolis. They came from a dying planet.
All they wanted, in exchange for their vast knowledge of science and technology, was a small share of the Earth's natural resources. Theirs was a mission of peace ... and mankind believed them.
Until they began to multiply into an army of alien invaders.
Until men, women and children - entire cities - began to vanish from the Earth.
Until the horrifying reality behind their mission of peace- a reign of terror reminiscent of Nazi Germany on a global scale - created the human imperative -
Resist or Perish! Based on a Movie-For-Television. Written by Kenneth Johnson. A Kenneth Johnson ProductionMore Sci-horror. The TV series was fun. Super-intelligent, drop dead gorgeous alien's visit the earth, make out they're oh so very benign, do us a few favours to win our trust, etc. But peel away the layers of latex and we discover to our horror that they are slimy, lizard-tongued flesh-eating fiends and the real reason they're here is to cultivate us as their food supply! The space monsters colonise the planet with ease and all that stands between us and being processed into sausages is a tiny resistance movement. Let's face it: we're all doomed! I think there was a minor outcry when one of the ET's ate a baby because it was all too "realistic" for some? Anyhow, I haven't read the book - there are at least half a dozen subsequent volumes - so I'm hoping someone who has will give us the lowdown.

I've read this one (surprise surprise) and I think I read one of the follow-up volumes as well. Unfortunately it was twenty-odd years ago, and the only bits I recall with any clarity are the man getting his arm shattered after dipping it in something nasty, and the half-human half reptile birth scene. I bet that bit is on youtube somewhere...

The ETs didn't eat a baby - there is a scene where Diana and her sidekick are caught chowing down on small, furry animals, though. Diana is seen (through the magic of state-of-the-art 1984 prosthetics) extending her jaw like a snake and swallowing a large, fluffy guinea-pig whole. She's also later seen irritably biting the head off of a bird like Ozzy Osbourne in drag...

Ah, thanks for setting me straight on that one, oatcake! That's her, the divine Diana. For those who enjoy watching latex-faced ladies in iffy futuristic costumes devouring friendly household pets, click on the pic. it's top stuff.
