Of course it was to try and protect or hide work from non-members that the workshop became "members-only" in the first place. How do we know who the Vault members are in every case? How do you know some haven't been nicked? That's a good point. But I somehow doubt it.

How do we know who the Vault members are in every case? Obviously none of us know every member, but a lot of us have corresponded with each other. But no, we can't know everyone. It would be a bit sad if we needed to.

And there's 20 or so members who haven't posted anything here.

Oh dear, this is just the kind of point I was making above about what a shame it would be if we started to distrust each other. You all make valid points of course, as, to be blunt, anyone can pretend to be anyone they want in the covert world of the internet, but please let's keep the trust going on this forum. Here's an anecdote which I hope will explain how I feel about this. On one of the autograph collecting forums I used to use, there's a horrible feeling of mistrust that permeates the whole board. In the autograph world, there's a lot of tension between the real fans/collectors and those who just get things signed in order to put them on eBay or similar and make a quick profit. As a result, everyone who joins that forum is immediately treated with suspicion, and that unfriendly atmosphere permeates the whole board. Members have to be very careful what they say; disagree with the moderators and the people who've been there longest and you're likely to get problems. When I joined the Vault, I was immediately struck by how friendly and helpful you all were, even though you didn't know who I was. Well, I'd introduced myself briefly to Des at FantasyCon last year following numerous eBay transactions, but apart from that, no-one knew who I was - I could have been anybody. But you made me feel immediately at home here (which is probably why I talk so much, as I'm normally pretty quiet!). It would be terrible, in my view, if the forum lost that welcoming and helpful feel that it has. But here is one practical suggestion for you. On the said autograph collecting forum, if a member doesn't post relatively regularly, or joins and then nothing is heard from them, then the moderator sends a PM first, and then deletes the account if that doesn't get a response. There certainly could be an issue with people joining for spurious reasons, so it might be as well to be alert to this, but I think the most likely explanation is that peope join to take a look and then decide it's not the kind of place they want to be anyway. I mean, I might have joined, decided you all scared me too much, and then never come back here again! So, please, let's keep this forum nice and welcoming, friendly and helpful.

I think you are reading a little too much paranoia into some of the posts above, Caroline. I don't think anyone is after any kind of witch hunt.

I'm probably a bit too paranoid about forums myself after my bad experiences on a couple of autograph ones! I wasn't actually trying to suggest that anyone was starting to be suspicious/unfriendly; I was just worried that it might start heading that way if we weren't careful.

Yes strange how most of us tuck into a splatter movie, read about horrific torture, try to imagine the worst possible scenarios for our next creative act and then maintain an easy camaraderie on the net

I think my post was the most tinged with "paranoia" (please note quotes), but I get that way if my cat stares at me too intensely (I'm sure the little sod does it deliberately). Definitely would be saddened if the Vault lost that friendly atmosphere and can't really imagine it happening. Nice to see you back, Dem. Now that you're temporarily disabled, this would probably be a good time to post more SF, cos I'm running out of horror reviews.
