The Smell of Evil by Charles Birkin is a great anthology - and a bargain at $1. I bought the Valancourt reprint of this not long ago. That cost me a lot more than that!

I used to own Legends for the Dark, The Other Passenger and The Smell of Evil, all with the same covers as jamesdoig's copies. The only one of them I still have is Legends for the Dark (bought new and preserved for best part of fifty years, against all the odds). It was the first place in which I saw a Lovecraft poem. Thousands of books must have passed through my hands. I don't suppose I'd have room to store them all.

Sorry to report that a Canberra landmark, Gaslight Books, has closed its doors for the last time. The proprietrix, Gayle Lovett had run it for 25 years and is now in well-earned retirement. On the last three days there was a $2 a book sale, with the remainder going to charity. I picked up this lot, Gayle kindly treating Varney as a single book. Those Wildside Varney covers must be amongst the worst I've seen, but there you go. Narrow Houses 2: Touchwood is signed by the English contributors - I guess Gayle must have been over there when it was published.

It's always a great shame to hear about the closure of another book shop. Apart from a W.H. Smith and charity shops, there is nothing around here that sells books, and it is a matter of either travelling to a bigger town or use internet sources such as Amazon, Ebay etc. I can't see the trend towards internet sources ever being reversed. Sadly, the pleasure of just walking into a shop and browsing, be it new or used books, would appear to be something future generations will not have to the extent that we had a few years ago.

Lifeline Bookfair has rolled around again - a few things of Vaultish interest for $2 each: This is a Digit book, R958: Nice Col Cameron cover for this Horwitz book. Since it's my birthday today I thought I'd share one of my pressies with you all. My beautiful wife presented me with these 5 novels I'd had on my Amazon wish list. They're all books I've seen favourably reviewed on Will Errickson's too much horror fiction site. The Preview button doesn't seem to work so I'll just have to trust to chance and hope the image isn't too big or too small. Anyway, really looking forward to these, particularly Jaws 2 and Darksong. edit: oh, Darksong wasn't actually reviewed as far as I remember but the cover looked great and I love radio so...

Two from thriller writer James Mitchell:
A Magnum for Schneider (1969) Innocent Bystanders (1969)
A Magnum for Schneider was filmed twice. Firstly, it was a single television play, transmitted in 1967, which went on to become the Callan TV series. Secondly, it was filmed for the cinema in 1974 as Callan.
Innocent Bystanders, the last of Mitchell's quartet of spy thrillers featuring John Craig, was filmed in 1972 with Stanley Baker playing Craig. Also featured were Sue Lloyd of Crossroads fame, and Donald Pleasence as Craig's boss. Oddly enough, Pleasence's character was called Loomis, the same character name he portrayed years later in the Halloween series of films.
