Good luck with the Ray Russell - I gave up a couple of chapters in. I think it was the phrase "...her breasts trembled like flowers in a light breeze." that did it. That and a Marenghian description of our young heroine/next victim's pubic hair as a "fleecy nest" a bit further down the page.

One for the back of the Vault - a classy production from Horwitz (1966) for a buck at the junk shop: There's even Vault content:

Great covers on those... nice and cheap for Newnes as they tended to buy copyrights outright (Wallace sold a lot of his outright to them and Ward Lock which is why those early novels turned up a lot as low-rent Digit paperbacks). The Wallace material comes from one book called The Trial Of The Seddons, which was published in 1913 or 1914 (seen both dates mentioned, but never seen an actual copy of the book)and draws heavily on his crime supporting days. Looks like they spread it thin and used some other still known names like Wm LeQuex to sell the titles and padded them out. Bet they're interesting volumes if a bit curates egg!

Ta, Mr D. That should have read 'Wallace's crime REPORTING days' of course, though he did like to give hand-outs to old lags in return for bits of information and tips he could use in books.

Couple of recent acquisitions from junk shops, charity stores, flea markets and lowlife dives: Movie tie-in of Frenzy: Badger Book SP5: One of those awful Australian Eclipse reprints, this one from a Faucett original I think: A Scripts book, Horwitz's adult imprint: Vol 1 #2 with The Beauty and the Beast Affair, "a complete novel of shocking terror":

A few recently acquired Horwitz curiosities, including a couple for the back of the V. Wolf Dietrich, The Naked Vampires, 1971 - from Scripts, one of Horwitz's Adult imprints: Stuart James, Jack the Ripper, 1962 - 2nd Horwitz edition. Surely a Frank Benier cover, Horwitz, 1962: Kay Keane, The Barber, Horwitz, 1962: The Monster of Rillington Place and other crime stories, Horwitz, 1963: Carl Ruhen, The Crucifiers, Stag, 1979 Gordon Kurtis, Requiem for a Bikie, Stag, 1977 Peter Brand, Rogue Black, Stag, 1977 March Hastings, Her Private Hell, Scripts, 1974

That is a truly wonderful haul, James. Particularly like the look Pyjama Girl, Monster of Rillington Place and The Barber who, I'm guessing, is some kind of woman-hating Sweeney Todd tribute act? Even though these days I find v**pire fiction a complete turn off, would still be tempted by Wolf Dietrich's The Naked Vampires.

The Naked Vampires sounds a lot of fun, Nice cover too. Horwith must have been a juggernaut on the australian market.

James, is Shark: The Killer Of The Deep fiction, non-fiction or "non-fiction"?
