...posted this on the old board then noticed this is the new one...oops!!
Here goes:
"Hello there...I'm hoping someone on this board can help me. I remember being particularly freaked out by a large hardback book of ghost stories my gran had, and I'd love to read them again. All i can remember of the book itself is that is was quite large, black and dark green cover (can't remember the image on the front but foliage seems familiar) and there was a particular story in it that terrified me...A man ended up in some exotic tribe-filled land/island and was reluctant to leave (can't recall what tempted him). He was told that in order to leave the island successfully, he would not be allowed to look back at any point or he would spend an eternity in hell. Needless to say he did look back!
I hope this isn't too vague, just hoping someone will recall anything about this book/short story!
Thanks in advance "
and
"p.s. and while I'm here, there's a film I'd like to trace too. I think it was mid 70s possibly; a married couple living in a nice house in the middle of a forest. Either the man or woman, while out on a stroll, finds an unusual tree stump with a name carved into it (possibly Nell?) and they take it back to their home. The man becomes obsessed with the tree stump/sculpture, and it becomes obvious that the stump is not quite happy with the man's divided attention with the wife, so tries to kill the wife. I'm sure I can recall the woman touching the stump, at which point the stump (from seemingly nowhere) instantaneously grows thorns/spikes to hurt the woman.
Thanks again!!!! "
Thankyou!

Hello Bathory, I was just replying to your question over at the other board - and suggesting that you came here - when I found you'd anticipated me. I think the story about the "jealous log" was used in the House of Hammer TV series. I'm sure someone else here will remember it better than me. And welcome! Rog

Welcome Bathory. Hope you don't mind but I retitled the thread as perhaps it will attract some of our more clued-in members. I've drawn a blank on the story/ collection. Have you any idea when it was published? I guess if your gran had it we're talking something pre-sixties? The tree-stump is driving me mad because I'm sure I've seen it but can't put a name to it, or even twig if it's a film or tv episode. Had a look at this useful Hammer House Of Horror site but it didn't answer to any of the plot outlines as far as I can tell. If nothing else, this useless post will at least bump your queries. Thanks for joining!

You're not thinking of Tales that Witness Madness, are you?

Well done, Mr. Terror, you're absolutely right. It's the third story from Tales ... (1973), Mel, featuring Joan Collins at her I Don't Want To Be Born best. Some kindly soul put this on YouTube a while back but I hadn't figured how to snag the clips at the time :' Is the rest of the film up to this excellent standard?
That's one part solved, anyhow. The book's a toughie.

Well, I always liked it, I'm not sure if anyone else did.

Ha - just run across this thread! Joanie in babydoll nightie wielding a meat clever at the big 'ol tree stump is arguably the greatest tosh image in brit horror ! I have TTWM on ntsc video - the least seen anthology out there - probably. Look out for Mary Doctor Who Tamm getting naked in the voodoo feast story too !
