According to Hugh Lamb, there's a version of The Three Impostors that differs from standard issues in terms of content.

"... There is also a strong element of sadism in his work ... The Three Impostors absolutely reeks of cruelty, both in its various episodes and in the final death of the young man. There is a reported vignette which doesn't seem to appear in editions of the book I've seen, of a man who collects various instruments of torture."
