A word to the wise. Get yourselves down to Sainsburys in Whitechapel where they've SLASHED the price of pumpkins from £2.99 to a giveaway £1.49!
While stocks last!
I haven't got one yet, and i'm having a bit of a dilemma about it all to be honest with you. You know when you carve them and they go all squishy after three days? Well, that's ok, no problem with that. But if i get one today, will it be all squishy by the time the bride gets to carve it on Oct 31st, or do they only go like that after you've gutted them and put a candle in?
Please advise!

Do you realise, I have NEVER carved a pumpkin and put candles in it! Hmmm, am I missing out on something interesting?
It might not go squishy (if left alone) until after the sell-by date, Dem. I don't know for sure, but seems logical to me ...

Sounds reasonable to me, Caroline. I'm not sure if they even have sell-by dates. It's not like anyone's gonna eat them. Perhaps they should have a 'will turn to gunk' by dates. That would be more helpful. Anyhow, you really should have a good carve - it's a great stress valve, especially if you imagine that you're slicing up someone you don't like's face! One thing though: if you can't get a pumpkin, don't even think about using an alternative vegetable. One year the shops had sold out, so the bride came over all resourceful and improvised with a halloween turnip. Never again .....

I'm not sure if they even have sell-by dates. It's not like anyone's gonna eat them. We make pumpkin soup out of ours, but there are lots of recipes you can use them in.

Erm, I've just watched a septic blister doing it's worst all over a dressing, so i think i'll pass on that. But many thanks for the suggestion, mr. flibbertigibbet! Anyway, i know you've all bitten your fingers down to stumps, worrying "will he? won't he?", so i'll keep you in suspenders no longer. I took the plunge! Today! It's a monster! Also, I picked up a groovy Halloween Free Activity Leaflet bursting with Pumpkin face ideas, a Creepie Cookie recipe, Scary Word Search, Ghost Hunt maze, 'jokes' (as "hilarious" as any you've read on here ) and best of all, "if you're in the store on Friday 31st October, go to the customer service desk and say 'Trick or Treat' and get a free Fun Size treat"! Admittedly there's the dicey "One per child when accompanied by an adult" obstacle to overcome, but i've only got a mental age of about two so if i take the bride along everything should be rosy.

Ooo, I forgot to mention .. I looked at pumpkins in Morrisons the other day - they DO have sell by dates on (the ones I saw were 6 Nov) and they were just £1.39. Still, I guess things are cheaper up here than where you are, Dem. I must admit I wasn't at all tempted to buy one to try carving it up, but I did think of you when I saw them!
