Have not been on here for a full six days, owing to being made redundant on Monday from the firm I have worked at for the past 18 years - feeling surprisingly chipper in the circumstances and may even be able to treat myself to a Pan Vol 30 from the pay-off - I do however need to find alternative employment pretty sharpish so I have had to resist the temptation to discuss in depth the 'fear of animals' theme that seems to emanate through many of the stories in Pan Vol 7, and similar gems of wisdom.
However I will return, and wish you all well in the meantime!
I reckon Tesco should do a 'value' version of the milk chocolate with rice crispies in it and call it 'Credit Crunch' - yep, that's the sum of my new career aspirations so far.......
Love
Colin

Oh no, sorry to hear that, Colin. My hubby was made redundant a few years ago (after 29 years service) and it can be a worrying time. Luckily, he kept himself busy with agency work for a year, and then managed to find something permanent - though it's not as good as he wanted, but his age (being over 55) is a limiting factor.
Here's hoping you manage to find another job which you enjoy pretty soon.

Best of luck, Col (Don't blow your redundancy on a Pan 30 before you're certain of another job!) I've been there twice - the second time was a bastid as it took me a while to get another job, but hang in there.

Hi Colin. Sorry to hear about the job mate. That sucks. I've been there and done that and life goes on, and often gets much better. Chin up mate and go out and get that Pan 30!

You have all my sympathy, Colin. A similar thing happened to me back in the mid-nineties. On that occasion it was from a job I had been at for 20 years.
Hope you get fixed up with something good soon!
Best wishes David

agreed hope you don't get 'stuck out in the cold' for too long. my brother in law narrowly avoided the same fate last week working for a 'nameless' american bank that's had a few newsworthy problems...

Thanks for all your kind messages - I feel bad for having a cry on a site dedicated to tales of torment, horror and misery. Actually come to think of it............. You are all good people and I hope I get to have a beer or two with as many of you as possible at some stage. I am seriously thinking of trying to get into teaching after 25 years in the horrible back biting cut throat property law game. It would be nice to do something useful for a living, getting all those youngsters reading Pan Horror from and early age! Cheers all Colin ('Luke')

Hi Colin
Real sorry to hear of your misfortune and wish you all the best for the future.
I think you're made for teaching! See if they can rush you in as a temp somewhere before Halloween!

Yeah - they're always moaning that there aren't enough male teachers to provide good role models for kids of primary school age, so if you're hearing the calling that might be a good place to start. Good luck with the job hunting. I'm in much the same sort of position - for the past twenty years I've worked on new build construction, and since June nothing has been selling, so all the sites have shut down and we're all scratching around. TBH I'm glad of the opportunity to have some time off. That said, I don't feel like I've had much time off yet, but I'm a bit wary of getting too much of what I'm wishing for... like two years' worth, for example.

My previous employment ended badly last year and left me at even more of a loose end than I already was. Took me a while to find my way back into the world of work but I can honestly say that I'm happier now than I ever was at my old place. I suppose what I'm trying to say is; Don't worry, Colin. Make the most of this chance to give yourself a bit of a breather and something's bound to turn up sooner or later when the time is right.
Mine's a pint.
