Who's he based on, does anyone know? I'd hazard a guess Shaun Hutson was an influence? I'm guessing Shaun might have 'written more books than I've read'!

I've not visited Mr. Marenghi's dark place but on the strength of his titles - The Ooze, Afterbirth (a mutated placenta attacks Bristol) and Crabs - i'd say the "sculptor of nightmares" has something of the GNS about him.

www.garthmarenghi.com/canon.htmThe Wikipedia entry on Shaun Hutson claims GM owes much to him (a classic example of a self-absorbed horror writer.) I'd say his books are Hutson/Guy N Smith parodies (or indeed the whole nasty genre - how can you resist that Independent review 'Rats learn to drive in this book.' ) His appearance has something of Stephen King about it to me.

I've got the TV series on DVD stashed away somwhere.
Never quite as funny as it could have been and thought it was.
The passages Merenghi read out at the beginning of each of the episode were definitely in the style of Hutson, but quite frankly they're already a self-parody so what's the point?
Merenghi's insistence upon wearing a leather-jacket and describing himself as a 'dream-weaver' also bring to mind the insufferrable Neil Gaiman.

Garth Marenghi is an amalgamation of the writers the two creators of the series grew up reading (namely GNS, Hutson, Herbert, Halkin and Laws).
