These are the Penguin 60p mini-books, right? I know Poppy Z. Brite has one, His Mouth Will Taste Of Wormwood 'cause I've seen it around - that's definitely a horror. I'm pretty certain they've issued something by Patrick McGrath too.

The Quick Reads ones are something fairly new. I know my friend who works in a library and is a big Doctor Who fan (no jokes please!) was saying they'd got a few Doctor Who ones in his library. But I think they've rolled it out to all kinds of authors/genres - the aim being to get people (especially young ones) reading again by starting them off on something which is a "quick read"!

Ah, thanks for setting me straight Caroline. Sounds like a good idea to me provided they're stand alone stories as opposed to novel extracts? Will have a look out for these if and when I can psyche myself for a visit to the rotten 'idea's store'.

I sometimes think that we might be the last generation that actually can read more than ten pages. I mean we are at the bottom of the heap - horror aficionados and lovers of pulp nonsense but it seems that even the ability to skim a lurid paperback is gradually slipping beyond the public (gets flat cap from hatstand and prepares for gurning contest)

^i'd have to agree with that.
-theyre all stand alone full stories dem. i'm actually surprised there isnt some out and out horror/supernatural tales as i think theyd work really well.
