As always (when first joining a site) I feel it necessary to say 'sorry if this has been discussed before' when I start a new post - however, here goes;
Without looking at the covers, I can think of at least three volumes where the photo on the front is of a real (but made up) person, eg Miss Skull Face (5) The Mummy (9) and Blue Face (19)
I wonder what stroke of fate led to these people being immortalised?
Where are they now?
'Hey, you there, young lad that makes the tea. Pop on these bandages and stand under that green light over there would you, there's a good chap'
All the best
Colin

Well our friend allthingshorror is working on the story of Van Thal and the Pan Horror series and, from his results to date, I wouldn't put it past him finding out for you! Here's the link to his Pan Horror site and another to a recent interview. Be warned: the latter contains a scary cameo from Uri Geller.

Morning Colin -
The photos - as far as I have been able to find out (as sadly no records exsist) were created by the in-house art department, and used people who worked for Pan at the time.
It's also certainly the case with the Fontana book of Great Horror Stories with volume 5 (woman/bird with long yellow beak) having on the cover the one and only Mary Danby.
I have crossed referenced the Pan Horror covers with the one I have of Bertie Van Thal, and alas, he never chose to don up in a mummy suit...
There is a lead I'm chasing with the cover of 19 though - she was one horny red-eyed vixen!!

Now there's a topic for discussion; 'Pan Horror Cover Stars You Have A Crush On Or Might Consider Slleping With' but perhaps I'll leave that one for Christmas Eve or something.
Whilst you come to mention it - 'skull face' girl on the cover of No 5 is not unattractive either!
Thanks for your response by the way. The covers of these books are legendary in their own right and undoubtedly helped sell thousands of copies so it's fun to speuclate as to their origins.. Still very new to the site (about 1 day to be precise) I'm amazed and amused to find that even the covers have nicknames - great stuff
Kind regards
Colin

Well....this is a major coup... I am now in contact with the person who took quite a few of the photographic covers of the Pan Horror books...more will follow as and when.
