About time I updated this as we're back to the Weird Tales 101 now. Somehow I left Victor Roman's famous vampire short Four Wooden Stakes off the original, and Mr. Mains has since confirmed that Oscar Cook's Dog Death and The Creature of Man are one and the same story. We've lost David H. Keller's The Dead Woman and Paul Ernst's The Scourge Of Mektoub as they appeared respectively in Fantasy Magazine, April 1934 and Oriental Stories, December-January 1931, not Weird Tales as given above.

Hutchinson's, Not At Night & Weird Tales

"The jacket for this first volume (and for many of the later ones), was designed by that clever advertising-agent, Betty Prentis, who was then working as a freelance artist under her trade name of Eliza Pyke. It was "Eliza", with her sense of dramatic colour, who contributed not a little towards a "brighter bookstalls" movement!"

Have no way of confirming this at time of writing, but I suspect "Eliza Pyke"was responsible for a string of Hutchinson Mystery Story covers from January through to July 1927.

Eliza Pyke? Later. No "?" about the skull in the mirror painting. It bears her signature in the bottom RH corner.

There was frequent crossover between the Hutchinson publications and Weird Tales. Elliott O'Donnell's The Ghost Table (Weird Tales, February 1928), which infamously denied Lovecraft's The Call Of Cthulhu cover-story status, had long seen publication in Hutchinson’s Mystery (June 1923). Likewise, G. G. Pendarves' The Devil’s Graveyard made Hutchinson’s Mystery (Dec. 1924) several months before featuring in Weird Tales (Aug. 1926), as did her The Return (Adventure-Mystery (March 1924)/ Weird Tales, April 1927). Arlton Eadie's The Devil's Tower (Adventure-Mystery, Oct. 1928) resurfaced in Weird Tales for March 1933.

Nor was it one-way traffic. Harold Ward's The Skull from Weird Tales' début issue (March, 1923) was exhumed for Hutchinson’s Adventure-Story, August 1925. W. J. Stamper's Lips of the Dead (Weird Tales Jun 1925) returned in Hutchinson’s Mystery Story for Feb. 1926. Arthur J. Burks Faces (Weird Tales Apr 1927) and Sewell Peaslee Wright's Guarded (Weird Tales, Mar 1927) were both reprinted in July 1927's Hutchinson’s Mystery. Further examples include Greye La Spina's The Dead-Wagon (Weird Tales Sept. 1927 /Hutchinson’s Adventure & Mystery Story, May 1928), J. U. Giesy's Ashes And Circumstance and E. Hoffman Price's The Sultan's Jest (both Weird Tales Sept. 1925 and Hutchinsons' Sovereign, Nov 1925), and Arlton Eadie's Flames of Destiny, (Weird Tales March 1928/ Hutchinson’s Adventure & Mystery, July 1928).

Other Hutchinson authors to contribute to either Not At Night, Weird Tales, or both during this period include F. A. M. Webster ('Michael Annesley'), Douglas Newton, Francis Beeding, Dagney Major, Anthony M. Rud, J. Joseph-Renaud, Henry S. As mentioned, I'm not 100% certain they were painted by Betty/ 'Eliza', but, to my untrained eye, the style is certainly reminiscent.

Gruesome Cargoes is atypical of the series in that its bereft of Weird Tales reprints. Dagney Major's Children Of Bondage is essentially Tod Browning's Freaks a few years early.
