Ah, it's a shame this one isn't better. I've recently been "turned on" to nautical horror by "terror tales of the ocean" and am on the hunt for some further reading (got a hankering to write one myself too). I've been advised to read more William Hope Hodgson so shall head down that route.

ken bruen's 'Jack Taylor' PI novels, set in Galway, are some of the darkest books I've ever read - only halfway through the series and can't see how he can get any 'noirer'!
read a couple of the standalones - 'the hackman blues' was very good. dark and horrible!
really enjoyed the film version of 'london boulevard' but didn't enjoy the film of 'blitz' at all...

i enjoyed the film, very close stylistically to the book and i could spot the bit where the critics (and jessica albe) walked out at the premier...

i think i have a short story about the same main character by this author and it was very good (was most likely in Mammoth Book of International Crime) - i'll try and dig out the title when i get home tonight
edit:title of anth was actually mammoth book of worlds best crime stories
