Symphony and Psychopath (NEL, 1975) Career funny man, of stage, screen and radio, wrote several original books for NEL. An autobiography (The World is Full of Charlies), so far, so good, but then two thuggish, sexy ‘Bannerman’ novels and a crazed tale of a musical serial killer, Symphony and Psychopath. You’d have thought Charlie would have written novels in line with his comedy persona… bawdy humour, farces maybe? Instead, he seems to want to redefine himself as a hard-edged porn writer. His fans were in for a shock. Symphony is humourless, psychotic, sex-obsessed and graphic. For example, murder by plastic bag… during sex, in even more detail than a Guy Smith novel. A dull story, almost monolithic in tone, though the contrast with his public persona is a worrying schism and the main attraction.
