This thread is for stray observations from my reading of various volumes by and about the Squire of Arkham, the Comte d'Erlette himself. I have been having something of a Derleth summer, which included an unplanned visit to Sauk City and a brief drive past Derleth's home, Place of Hawks, situated across the street from a cemetery, where if memory serves he was buried. First thing to note is this PDF of a May 1978 issue of the August Derleth Society newsletter. It includes part of a memoir Ramsey Campbell wrote, "Derleth as I knew him": www.fanac.org/fanzines/August_Derleth_Society_Newsletter/der0103.pdfInteresting observation Ramsey quotes from Derleth, from a 1964 letter: Fantasy has a steadier market (and a less crowded one) than sf fantasy, which has too much bilge in it. The sf people seldom buy non-sf fantasy, whereas the fantasy devotees who buy our books buy everything in which they are interested, which includes sf if it's good. The sf people, the fans that is, are in general a narrower lot.H.

All our extant correspondence has now been published, in fact.
