August Derleth - The Mask of Cthulhu (Arkham House, 1958, hc, 201 pages, posted edition Carroll & Graf, 1996, 201 pages)
Content: The Return of Hastur (1939) The Whippoorwills in the Hills (1948) Something in Wood (1948) The Sandwin Compact (1940) The House in the Valley (1953) The Seal of R'lyeh (1957)
This is a collection of August Derleth's Mythos tales, not to be confused with The Trail of Cthulhu which is four connected novellas. Except the last one (Fantastic Universe as Seal of the Damned) they were all published in Weird Tales. These are the usual Lovecraft pastiches, transformed through Derleth's ideas how the Mythos should work. So you get a lot of call backs to Lovecraft tales, a lot of exposition and italics, only more organized.
The cover of the Carroll & Graff edition is rather bland, but combined with The Trail of Cthulhu which is similiar there is at last a marketing concept recognizable.
