Witchfinder Vol. 3: The Mysteries of Unland - written by Kim Newman & Maura McHugh, art by Tyler Crook (Dark Horse Comics, 2014, 5 parts) The third story was written by Kim Newman and Maura McHugh. Again this is not much connected to the Hellboy universe but a stand-alone story. Basically it is about about the mysterious Unland, the wetlands around the town of Hallam, and the creatures that inhabit it. Hallam is famous for its factory of a patent medicine potion called Poole’s Elixir, which is connected to the Eels.
It is an okay story, but somehow I was a bit disappointed. I thought the end a let-down, and I am not a fan of the artist. The concept seemed to consciousnessly avoid a lot of the usual Hellboy universe elements. Which made sense, I think, as it was not written by series regulars. But it also watered down the concept, he is just another Victorian occult detective here.
