Dear all,
Ro passed along this enticing news about the imminently forthcoming issue 42 of Ghosts and Scholars and I thought some of you might be interested:
If any of you have been thinking about subscribing to Ghosts & Scholars, this might be a good time to do so. Issue 42 (guest edited by Carole Tyrrell) will be going to the printer shortly. It includes the first ever publication of the completed version of M.R. James's "Speaker Lenthall's Tomb". As some of you will know, MRJ's draft manuscript for this story exists and has been transcribed, but unfortunately a page or pages, near but not at the end, are missing. Now John Linwood Grant has filled in the gap seamlessly and the story is complete. It's a good one: in some ways a precursor to "The Ash-Tree" but in others quite different. It also contains two of the very best female characters MRJ ever created. So if you'd like to subscribe please DON'T act on the info given on the G&S website as that's way out of date. Instead, message me with your email address and I'll send you a flyer.
The issue also includes a new "Folly story" by fan favorite Vicki Day. And no doubt numerous other goodies.
According to the new flyer, the Autumn issue will be edited by Helen Grant.
cheers, Hel.

Sounds very enticing, Steve & Ro, thanks! I might even be persuaded to pry open my wallet…

Thanks for posting, Steve. So glad there's another Vicky Day story to look forward to, and well done John Linwood Grant! The guest editors have each done a magnificent job, but I still can't get used to the relative lack of Ro.

My "Lady Wardrop's Notes" column (on dogs in MRJ's stories), an introduction to "Speaker Lenthall's Tomb" and a review.

All I remember about is now is that Frances Barber sliced the ham very thick.

No, Clive Ward has reviewed that (and liked it better than I did - I loathed Frances Barber). My review is of Simon Loxley's A Geography of Horror: The Ghost Stories of M.R. James and the Suffolk Landscape.

The insertion of Frances Barber's character into the story was one of an infusion of 'woke' aspects customary to Mark Gatiss' adaptations. The inclusion of inexplicably ethnic characters and random discussions on the furtherance of progressive causes are others.

Ro announced earlier today on social media that this issue has gone out of print prior to publication (I do not understand how this can be, but that's what she said).
I failed to get my email to Mark Valentine in on time, so I'll miss it.
cheers, Hel

Which means that all copies (just back from the printer) are spoken for.

Objectively, the best thing in it is "Speaker Lenthall's Tomb", which even in its original incomplete form is worth re-reading. Later I'm going to look at what John Linwood Grant actually did to complete the story. It'll keep me off the streets.
