John Bolton It was The Reploids cost David Hughes the editorship of Skeleton Crew one issue into its incarnation as a mainstream magazine. The way I understand it, Argus — perhaps wary that W. H. S**** had taken such offence to Graham Masterton's Eric the Pie that they refused to stock Frighteners — ran through King's story excising any bad language. Apparently, they didn't inform Mr. Hughes, who responded so furiously in the following issue's editorial that, he was given his marching orders and 20,000 copies of the August 1990 issue were withdrawn. Source for this info is a news feature in Fear for Sept. 1990. It's been a long time, but I recall liking Martin's werewolf novella at the time. Still haven't gotten around to Dan Simmons.

This story was new to me. Thanks. I wonder if someone would do this to King again. Skeleton Crew is another one I missed at the time.
