Shaun Hutson - Captives (Macdonald, 1991, HC, 432 pages) Mark Taylor
In 1991 Hutson had left W. H. Allen and switched to Macdonald, which re-published a lot of his backlist in hardcover. Captives covers a lot of old ground, maybe its biggest disadvantage. Like in Assassin some of the main protagonists are London gangsters, one a manager of a strip-club which is the stage for some sleazy sex. There are some gory murders, the novel begins with a well done and brutal shoot-em-up chase with a motorbike and a couple of squad cars on the streets of London. There is a lot of gun-play and some well-done twists, the end is a bit like Tarrantino, and Hutson does damaged, unsympathetic characters well. Still the spark won't ignite. Something seems to be missing.
