I thought this deserves a comment.
I read this in a hardback edition from the library, probably around the time it was first published.
The quick review is that it's a really good book.
The slightly longer review, which I more or less recall sending an old friend in an email, is that while it may be a very traditional and perhaps not wholly original ghost story, Campbell is in such absolute control of what he's doing that it's something of a masterpiece.
The critical moment of horror in the book has stayed with me ever since, as has the surprising and consequently moving epilogue.
