His parents fled Quebec in 1922 so that was the type of French spoken at home. Does it have a name? Quebecois (ke-bek-qwa) French.

I just thought of another marginally relevant thing. Joseph Conrad was born in the Russian Empire, in a Polish area, and only mastered English in his early twenties. Can people think of other authors who became major writers in the second language they mastered? Considering all the posts here now, shouldn't you change the thread title (if possible) to something more closely reflecting what's being discussed?

No one, apart from Swan, has realised what my homework is. They will kick themselves when they understand.

Can you change a thread title? I'm on phone, I've never tried to.

The reason I got onto this, which I won't reveal so others can think about it, was I was looking at female mathematicians. And I noticed Sophie Germain, who worked on it.

Quebecois (ke-bek-qwa) French. Might have been joual, depending on where they were from. ... Good heavens. My second post in a dozen-plus years.

I meant the one in Latin. It's a maths joke. Might have been joual, depending on where they were from. ... Good heavens. My second post in a dozen-plus years. It's catching. I'm some use after all.
