In horror films you will often see certain faces that are instantly recognisable, and these aren't just the main players, for their are actors who have a certain look that fits the genre, and are cast in minor roles with regularity. They can have an important part to play in the feel of the movie but are often overlooked, which is a shame. Can you name some below, as we remember these character actors who in their own way, and with a small flame, lit up films. Do you have any favourites? Share with us.

Here is one. Michael Ripper, who had a great name for a horror actor. I saw him in several Hammer films that I watched this year. Can someone tell us something about him?

I thought of him when I read your first post, but hadn't had time to check him out. He has a wikipedia article & a Guardian obituary from 2000

I was thinking as well that if you like Horror movies that aren't made in English speaking countries, then perhaps you know some famous, or recognisable actors that turn up regularly in these, but might not be known very well in the Anglosphere. Why don't you tell us about these actors. They might be German, French, Italian, Brazilian, or another interesting country.

I found this one: Dwight Frye
Iconic Universal roles: Known as āThe Man with the Thousand Watt Stareā and āThe Man of a Thousand Deaths,ā Frye became typecast as mentally unbalanced characters in Universal horror films after making his mark as the fly-eating madman Renfield opposite Bela Lugosi in 1931ās āDracula.ā The same year, he also played Dr. Frankensteinās hunchbacked assistant Fritz, who takes the wrong brain in āFrankenstein.ā (Marty Feldman brilliantly sent up the character in Mel Brooksā 1974 comedy āYoung Frankenstein.ā) Frye also played Karl, a henchman of the ruthless Dr. Pretorius in 1935ās āBride of Frankenstein.ā He appeared in smaller parts in 1942ās āThe Ghost of Frankensteinā and 1943ās āFrankenstein Meets the Wolf Man.ā see: www.latimes.com/entertainment/la-et-mn-universal-horror-supporting-players-pictures-photogallery.html

The restricted budget on Hammer's The Reptile meant that Michael Ripper and John Laurie had to share one fake beard between them - (I stole this joke from a tweet by Roy Bayfield.)

This had never occurred to me. Jojo I hope your new years resolution is to tell more jokes. And tick a like on one of my posts. Obviously. After all you never know how things might turn out.

There is a lot of good things to say about this man. It's time to do him justice
