From our last chat in AprilMy dear friend, occassional co-writer and Great Fontana Horror Stories legend, Bryn Fortey, died of kidney failure and sepsis last night. His family are devastated; he was a father, grandfather and greatgrandfather - and he leaves behind an amazing legacy of stories and poetry. Think FRIGHTENERS 2, the 12th and 15th FONTANA BOOK OF GREAT HORROR STORIES edited by Mary Danby and two volumes of David Sutton's NEW WRITINGS IN HORROR AND THE SUPERNATURAL
He had stopped writing when I first came into his life, just after the murder of his son Jim and he was a broken man. I then re-entered his life in 2011, just after the death of his wife Maddalena, and managed to persuade him to come and meet Mary Danby at whatever horror convention it was back in 2011. I pushed him to start writing, and I suppose I can take some of the blame in getting his first collection MERRY-G-ROUND AND OTHER WORDS published by Alchemy Press. And I made sure I pushed really hard to get him to write a sequel to his masterpiece 'Shrewhampton North East' called 'Shrewhampton North-West' I was privileged to write the intriduction for it. He never stopped writing, even when felled by a stroke a few years ago and he had to re-learn his craft Indeed - we wrote CURSE OF THE MONSTER together and we have one more story due to be published this year in the ALCHEMEY PRESS BOOK OF HORRORS 3 that I'm heartbroken he'll never get to see, because he was looking forward to it so very much. I'll pass on any condolences you have to his family if you were a fan of his work. RIP Bryn Fortey 27.8.37-21.7.21

This is sad. I only read his story Prison quite recently and saw that he edited the "Post Beat Poetry Magazine" Outlaw. I gathered that at the time he lived for his craft, which must have been difficult.
My condolences for the family.

I am sorry for your loss. It's wonderful that you got him writing again. He looks so excited in your screen snap--absolutely chuffed to be talking to you.

A great loss. "Shrewhampton North East" was/is a classic. His recent stuff was pretty damn fine too. For those who haven't read the more modern tales, there are links to three of his recent stories (plus an interesting mention of him in a non-fiction piece titled "Wales & The Weird Tale") in "Horla" on this web page.
